The central processing of itch involves multiple areas of the brain. The specific brain areas activated by itch are also involved with the central processing of pain. This implies that neural networks activated by these two stimuli are not distinct. Yet itch and pain have different activation patterns and reflexes.
Pain causes a withdrawal reflex. If pain is experienced, we try to protect the painful part of the body and not touch or overuse it. In my humble opinion and Im no Doctor, I think it starts as the nerve endings are stimulated by all the normal eczema irritants like Temperatures, Chemical irritants, dry skin etc, then we start to scratch. Then it turns into a Neurogenic itch, basically, it feels good to itch so your brain tells you to continue. You then start to feel better after itching but the damage is already done.
You then spend the next few days trying to heal where youve scratched, and hopefully, you havent caused a flare-up which can take weeks to cure.
Why Is My Eczema So Itchy At Night
