To apply the emollient:

  • use a large amount

Its winter, and in many parts of the country that means cold, windy weather and dry, chapped skin. For all of us that can be a problem, but for people who have eczema it can be miserable.

As a pediatrician, I have lots of patients with eczema. Each one of them is different, of course, with different triggers for their eczema and different therapies that help. But when eczema gets bad when parts of the skin get very irritated and scaly there are three things that help just about everybody.

1. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! This may seem obvious, but I cant overstate its importance and helpfulness. When it comes to picking a moisturizer, think greasy when eczema gets tough. This kind of moisturizer is called an emollient. Even just petroleum jelly, or hydrated petrolatum, which are both widely available, can really help dry, irritated skin. And while they feel greasy when you put them on, usually the skin soaks them right up. Applying emollients two or three times a day can really help when things get tough and can also help prevent eczema from flaring.

Right after the bath you want to put on any steroids or moisturizers. And then, you might want to consider

As with any chronic medical condition, eczema is best managed when you work together with your doctor and come up with a plan both for treating flares and for preventing them in the first place.

What Do We Know

There is evidence to suggest these allergic conditions share some of the same genetic markers. A chicken-and-egg conundrum underlies dermatologists understanding of how these conditions start: Do genetic mutations cause patients to be susceptible to external allergens, or does frequent exposure to allergens make patients more likely to develop these conditions?

Its likely a combination of both. Recent studies point to a mutation in the filaggrin gene as a key player in eczemas weakening of the skin. Normally, the gene helps make the top layer smooth and hardened against invaders. But in eczema, patches of itchy, uneven skin allow H2O to ooze out, and the top layer to become drier and less protective against allergens.

In turn, frequent exposure to substances such as dust and pollen might aggravate the weakened skin even more. And an influx of allergens might travel to other areas of the body, helping spur conditions such as asthma.

But researchers still need more data to understand what balance of genetic and environmental factors put patients at risk, says Kim. For now, he and other researchers are working toward ways to keep symptoms at bay by examining the ways the body can help fight eczema. One answer may lie in stimulating a specific type of immune cell one thats already in the spotlight for helping cancer patients.

Wear Gloves To Protect The Skin On Your Hands

Wear vinyl or plastic gloves for work that requires you to have your hands in water. Also, wear gloves when your hands are exposed to anything that can irritate your skin. Wear cotton gloves under plastic gloves to soak up sweat from your hands. Take occasional breaks and remove your gloves. This will prevent a buildup of sweat inside your gloves.

Wear gloves when you go outside during the winter. Cold air and low humidity can dry your skin. Dryness can make your eczema worse. Wear clothes made of cotton or a cotton blend. Wool and some synthetic fabrics can irritate your skin.

The Changes That Worked For Me

Some people find that following a vegan diet can help their eczema. Others choose to cut out gluten, eggs, and shellfish.

Something I learned through the process of treating my eczema is that everyones body is unique. The diets that work for some people wont work for others.

I quickly realized that extreme dietary changes made my eczema worse, so I learned to adjust my diet gradually.

I also knew that I couldnt maintain any major changes to my diet unless they meant I could still have varied, interesting, and tasty meals every day.

I made a diet plan that allowed me to keep making food that tastes amazing, but is good to my body, too.

The changes that helped me include:

  • increasing the variety and amount of vegetables with every meal
  • eating more whole grains like oats, brown rice, and whole grain pasta
  • upping intake of anti-inflammatory spices like turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger
  • introducing more fermented foods into my meals

Although these changes coincided with improvements in my eczema, they may or may not improve eczema in others. Were all different, and different things work for different people.

In the first year, I was vigilant about my diet. I avoided refined sugar completely and took a strict approach to what I could and couldnt eat.

Over time, Ive relaxed these measures , but theyre still rules that guide my eating habits.

If I feel like Im getting another flare-up, I revert back to this diet for a month or so and monitor how Im feeling along the way.
