What Else Are Diaper Rash Creams Good For

We all know that zinc oxide creams are great for treating diaper rash, but did you know that they can also be used for other purposes? Here are a few other uses for diaper rash cream that you may not have thought of:

  • Reduce razor bumps. If you suffer from razor bumps after shaving, try applying a thin layer of zinc oxide ointment. This will help soothe and reduce inflammation symptoms.
  • Protect skin from sunburn. Zinc oxide can also be used as sunscreen! If youre heading out for a day in the sun, apply a layer of diaper dermatitis cream before applying your regular sunscreen for added protection.
  • Treat poison ivy. If you come into contact with poison ivy, quickly apply a layer of diaper dermatitis cream. This will help relieve the itch and prevent further irritation. You will have noticeable relief within hours of application.
  • Treating minor burns, chapped cheeks, and heat rash. If you have a minor burn, simply apply some diaper dermatitis cream or ointment to the affected body part and you will experience relief from the pain.
  • Treating insect bites: If you have an itchy insect bite, just apply some zinc oxide cream to the area and it will help to soothe the itchiness.
  • Treating dry skin and cradle cap. Zinc oxide cream can also be used as a moisturizer for dry skin in infants. Just apply it to the affected area and you will experience relief from the dryness.

Treat Eczema With Zinc Oxide

Zinc oxide is an FDA-approved anti-inflammatory treatment that is recommended by many dermatologists around the world for irritated skin conditions, such as rash, poison ivy, and even eczema. Clinical research confirms that it soothes and calms the skin. Mild zinc oxide for eczema also offers antiseptic benefits to your skin.

The Truth About Zinc Vs Zinc Oxide:

Zinc is an essential mineral that is found in almost every cell and is a truly beneficial element in both cutaneous health and disease. Zinc stimulates the activity of approximately 100 enzymes, which are substances that promote biochemical reactions in the body. It must be obtained from the diet since the body cannot make enough. Next to iron zinc oxide is the most abundant trace mineral in the body. Zinc deficiency may explain alopecia, ulcers, infections and a host of strange unexplainable skin changes.

Despite oral zinc supplements being widely available and offering other health benefits, MedlinePlus says that these zinc pills are possibly ineffective for skin conditions such as eczema. Taking zinc orally does not appear to improve skin redness or itching in children with eczema.

Zinc oxide pastes can be purchased for eczema treatment and can be slathered on liberally in most cases though it should be kept in mind that the skin does not absorb zinc oxide, so it leaves a residue and will need to be covered.

Kinder Gentler Bleach Baths

We love to recommend bleach baths but know these dont work for everyone. Bleach baths can be painful because theyre often called for at the time when the skin is flaring and has a lot of open wounds.

One tip I like to suggest is to get into the bath with dressings still on. This will allow the skin to re-equilibrate and help alleviate some of that initial discomfort of getting into the bath, before you start pulling the wraps off.

Another way to help tolerate getting into bleach baths is to put a little antibacterial ointment or petroleum jelly in the cracks of the skin.

For children, you can distract the child with toys or an activity during the first couple of minutes of a bleach bath, so theyre focused on something other than the changing skin sensation that takes place in the first few minutes after getting in the tub.

Zinc oxide is widely used as a broad spectrum physical sunscreen. Its advantage lies in its low cost and an excellent safety profile. It has been used alone and in combination with other physical or chemical sunscreen agents. Recently microfine and nano-sized zinc oxide has become available which provides better cosmetic appeal and photoprotection than traditional zinc oxide preparations. Zinc oxide provides protection against UV-A1 superior to titanium oxide providing better spectrum protection .

Psoriasis And Psoriatic Arthritis

Baby Eczema Creams / Honest Review / 4 Products

Psoriasis is a common disorder affecting nearly 2-3% of general population with joint involvement being a common disabling complication. A large armamentarium of drugs ranging from time tested modalities like coal tar and phototherapy, methotrexate, and retinoids to newer biological modalities are being currently used. However, the chronically relapsing nature of the disease has always compelled the researchers to look for novel and safe therapies. Zinc has been tried for the management of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Sadeghian et al. found topical 0.25% zinc pyrithione cream, applied twice daily, effective for localized plaque psoriasis in a randomized double-blind controlled trial. The benefit was attributed to antiproliferative effect of zinc pyrithione. Oral zinc sulphate was found effective for psoriatic arthritis by Clemmensen et al. in a double blind crossover trial versus placebo in 24 patients of psoriatic arthritis. However, oral zinc sulphate did not produce clinically significant improvement as a treatment modality for plaque psoriasis .

Should You Put Rash Cream On Every Diaper Change

Yes! Theres no need to wait for the diaper rash to show up first. Using rash cream with every diaper change can help prevent diaper rash from happening in the first place. A lot of parents opt to use a rash cream for babies every time as a preventative measure, especially if their baby’s skin is prone to irritation and gets rashes often. By creating a barrier with diaper cream with every change, you can stay ahead of some of the most common causes of diaper rash:

  • Irritation from friction or chafing
  • Teething and/or starting to eat solid foods
  • Colds or antibiotics
  • Sleeping through the night , which means fewer diaper changes and more time marinating in #1 and #2

How To Prevent Eczema Flare

There are a few things you can do to prevent eczema flare-ups in babies.

  • Give them probiotics. Probiotics help to restore the natural balance of good bacteria in the gut, which can help to reduce inflammation throughout the body.
  • Breastfeeding is also beneficial for preventing eczema flare-ups as it helps to strengthen the immune system. If you are bottle-feeding, be sure to use a hypoallergenic formula.
  • Keep your babys skin hydrated and protect it from irritants by applying a gentle, unscented moisturizer after baths and whenever their skin feels dry.
  • Avoid exposing your baby to harsh chemicals and detergents such as alcohol-based baby wipes. Wash your child with gentle, dye-free, fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products instead.
  • Try to keep your babys skin cool and dry to avoid moisture build-up. Air dry your bays skin before putting on some clean clothes and fresh diapers. If you notice any itching and redness, apply a cool compress to the inflamed skin.
  • Avoid irritants. Identify and avoid substances that trigger your babys itching and eczema flare-ups.

Does Zinc Oxide Work For Eczema

Desitin Maximum Strength Diaper Rash Cream 113g

Zinc is present throughout your body, but especially in your bones, muscles, liver, and skin.

During an eczema flare-up, the body releases histamine, which causes you to feel itchy. You may also see small blisters or flaky, cracked, dry skin. Zinc can help address these weak points created in the skin during a flare-up.

Creams with zinc provide a moisture barrier to help soothe the dry, flaky skin that is common with eczema. Zinc creams can also help fight possible infections because of the mineral’s natural antibacterial properties and ability to promote healing.

Zinc oxide may even help with itching by inhibiting the release of histamine.

Should I Use Desitin On My Dog

You should avoid using Desitin on your doggo. Desitin is for human use only and is not approved for use in animals. Desitin contains a high concentration of Zinc Oxide which is safe for use in humans but too high for use in dogs. High amounts of Zinc Oxide can lead to zinc toxicity in dogs. Other ingredients in Desitin include petroleum jelly and lanolin, which are common irritants in allergy prone pups such as Bulldogs. If you use Desitin on your dog, it can lead to gastrointestinal upset in addition to other side effects, some of which can be serious.

Cleanse But Not With Disposable Diaper Wipes

Applying Zinc Oxide Cream

Before you use a cream on your skin, perform a small patch test to make sure you will not have a reaction when using the cream in large quantities. Since many people with eczema have sensitive skin, a patch test can prevent the distress caused by an adverse reaction.

To do a patch test, find an area of unaffected skin and apply a small amount of the product. If there is no reaction to the test site after a few hours, you can try using a the product in an area of eczema.

Types Of Zinc Products

A person can apply topical zinc oxide products to the skin. For instance, manufacturers commonly use the substance as an ingredient in sunscreen.

Zinc has anti-inflammatory properties and increases reepithelialization, which refers to skin healing over a wound, supporting its use for treating eczemas. Although it is less effective than other treatment methods, such as topical corticosteroids, it is a useful soothing and antipruritic agent.

Zinc oxide typically comes in the form of an ointment or paste. A person can choose from a range of brands and products, including:

Additionally, people who are deficient in zinc can take oral zinc supplements or eat food sources of zinc, such as seafood, lean meats, and soy, in their diet. If a person suspects they have a zinc deficiency, they should contact a doctor.

The National Institutes of Health recommend that adults aged 19 years and older take in a recommended daily allowance of zinc of 11 milligrams for males and 8 mg for females. The recommendations change to 1112 mg during pregnancy and 1213 mg when breastfeeding.

The authors said they required more evidence before they could draw any conclusions.

Preventing The Fire From Erupting

Newborn Product Bundle

In order to prevent the fire, or eczema flare-ups from appearing, many of the same strategies apply: you need to soak in water to hydrate, reduce microbes with bleach or soap-free cleansers, and protect the skin barrier with barrier creams, ointments, and other forms of occlusion.

For some patients who have eczema that really bounces back, using the fire-extinguisher approach short, strong bursts of corticosteroid or regular pulsed use of medications can be very helpful. A schedule can be worked out with your physician, and just how many medications are included in the regimen depends on the patient.

Wrap It Up: Skin Strategies For Little Kids

Parents have seen that when it comes to babies skin, the diaper area tends to be the smoothest and most hydrated. When it comes to babies with atopic dermatitis, more often than not, we often see that their skin can be the best in the diaper area. If we could diaper the whole body, then kids suffering with atopic dermatitis would do really well. But since we cant diaper the whole body, what we need to do is come up with other ways to compensate by providing a physical barrier for that inherently impaired atopic dermatitis skin.

Everybody has to try different things and decide what works for them, but I like plastic wrap for focal rashes. I dont suggest securing the wrap onto the skin with tape because a lot of kids can develop allergies to the adhesive in tape itself. In order to conceal the plastic wrap and make the look more fun for kids, covering the wrap with colorful duct tape sold at hardware stores helps disguise the weird-looking wrap, possibly creating something kids might be willing to wear to school.
