Eczema Risk Factors Causes & Symptoms

As a matter of fact, there is a wide range of causes and risk factors associated with eczema. And, eczema symptoms can manifest widely differently between those affected. While a singular cause of eczema has not been established, there are certain common causes leading to the onset and flares. In addition, a wide range of risk factors has been identified.

Risk Factors for Eczema

  • Temperature changes

Symptoms of Eczema

While many will experience a lessening of symptoms and fewer flares as they age, some will continue to experience eczema symptomsthroughout adulthood, such as atopic eczema rashes. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and change from one outbreak to another. Common symptoms include:

  • The appearance of small, raised bumps which may ooze liquid and develop a crust
  • Thick, dry, scaly skin that cracks
  • Red, brown or grayish patches of skin on hands, feet, ankles, wrists, neck, upper chest, eyelids, in skin folds, and on the face and scalp of infants
  • Sensitive skin that is swollen and raw from scratching
  • A recurring rash that causes intense itching, often disrupting sleep patterns
  • Rashes due to atopic eczema

Eczema Treatment: 13 Ways To Find Relief

While there is no cure for eczema, there are a variety of non-invasive eczema treatment options that can provide relief during a flare-up and some that may prevent its onset. These can include corticosteroids, but the following home eczema treatment options may be best.

1. Light Therapy/Phototherapy

According to the National Eczema Association, phototherapy helps to calm inflammation, reduces itching, increases vitamin D production and helps fight bacteria on the skin. Adding 1015 minutes a day of sun exposure, particularly during an eczema flare, can provide relief and potentially speed healing.

2. Vitamin D

In addition to increasing sun exposure, supplementing withvitamin D rich foods like cod liver oil, sardines, salmon, eggs and raw milk may help prevent eczema in children and adolescents. Ideally, during a flare you will get 2,000-5,000 IU daily if your sun exposure is low, consider boosting your intake with a high-quality supplement. Preliminary research shows that low vitamin D levels during pregnancy and during childhood may increase the risk for developing eczema.

3. Moisturize

Because dry skin is both a cause and symptom, it is imperative to moisturize affected areas at least twice a day. Coconut oil is the perfect moisturizer for eczema sufferers. This eczema treatment is antibacterial and anti-fungal, with antimicrobial properties that provide soothing relief, and may speed healing.

4. Treat the Mind and Body

5. Dead Sea Salt Baths

6. Cool, Wet Compresses

Gold Bond Ultimate: Skin Therapy Cream Soothing Chamomile

Best Healing Cream For Eczema Psoriasis Treatment, Natural ...

There are many types of moisturizer by Gold Bond Ultimate ranging from Soothing Chamomile, Restorative CoQ10 , Moisturizing Aloe Vera and the list goes on. One of our fans recommended the Intensive Healing Lotion by Gold Bond, however I did not found it in my area. I did find the Soothing Chamomile and bought it. Its the only one that is fragrance free and oil free. Supposedly the cream is recommended for people who have issues with skins sensitivity and irritation.

I must say I was real impressed with this one, no irritations on my skin and the cream was nicely textured, thick, and I experience great skin absorption. For the price it just recently became one of my favorites. It claims to help with relieving redness and help soothe irritated dry skin, and I mostly agree with it. It is offered in a tube of 127g .

It does contains a lot of ingredients compared to any lotions or creams that Ive ever seen . Less is usually better, so I will be investigating further with this one.

I noticed that the Intensive Healing Lotion version contains ceramides, where the soothing chamomile version does not, which can be a great benefit for eczema sufferers. Currently there is a commercial promoting an Eczema Gold Bond version but I havent found it yet in my area, so I may have to order it online. I will have to try both the Eczema Gold Bond and Intensive Healing Lotion to do a comparison.

Tips On Choosing A Moisturizer

Finding a moisturizer that works can be a challenge. What works for one person may not work for another. As the condition of your skin changes so can the effectiveness of a product. A manufacturer may also change the formulation of a product from one year to the next. The best eczema lotion, cream or moisturizer is the one that works for you.

Take the following steps when introducing a new product to your skin:

  • If you know you are allergic to a particular ingredient, check a products label before you buy it.
  • Review the list of moisturizers that have received the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance to see if the product you are interested in is on it.
  • The first time you use a new product apply a small amount to the pulse of your wrist or the crook of your elbow. Do not wash the area for 24 to 48 hours and watch for any allergic reaction, such as redness, a rash, any form of breakouts on the skin, itchiness, pain, or flaking.
  • What To Look For In An Eczema Cream

The best eczema cream may vary from person to person, depending on what youre looking for. For instance, your eczema symptoms may be on your face or your hands, or you may have extra-sensitive skin, so youll want to tailor the products you choose.

With that said, here are some of the important factors to look for in an eczema cream, according to dermatologists.

    How To Prevent Eczema Flare

Theres no known cure for eczema, and symptoms wont go away on their own. For most people, eczema is a chronic condition that requires careful avoidance of triggers to help prevent flare-ups.

    • Moisturize the affected areas at least twice a day. Weve taken the guesswork out of how to stop eczema immediately with an eczema cream.
    • Take shorter baths or showers with tepid versus hot water. Pat versus rub your skin dry afterward.
    • Try to identify and avoid the aforementioned triggers that can exasperate your condition.
    • Only use gentle soaps, cleansers, and body lotions.
    • Keep a humidifier in the rooms you spend the most time in, like the bedroom Hot, dry indoor air can parch sensitive skin and worsen itching and flaking. Opt for a portable unit or attach one to your furnace to add moisture to the air inside your home.
    • Wear cool, smooth-textured clothing and avoid clothing thats rough, tight, or scratchy. Also, wear appropriate clothing in hot weather or during exercise to prevent excessive sweating. Take a short, tepid shower immediately after physical activity.
    • Get a hold of your stress and anxiety. Such emotional disorders can aggravate atopic dermatitis. Try yoga, meditation, exercise, or an activity that brings you pleasure. Speak to a professional if need be.
    • See a dermatologist to discuss your treatment options if topical creams and lotions arent working.

Best Healing Cream For Eczema Psoriasis Treatment, Natural ...

One mum wrote: My son suffered from eczema and sensitive skin ever since he was a newborn. It was around 2 years of age that a friend recommended DermaVeen moisturiser. We had tried all different products, but his skin would always flare up. My son is now 11 years of age and we are still using this product. It’s oatmeal-based component helps the skin keep its moisture and with no lanolin or alcohol my sons skin doesn’t get irritated. The whole family use this moisturiser now and my husband loves the fact it has a subtle fragrance.

    Targeting Specific Problem Areas

Another deciding factor when choosing a product is the location of your targeted treatment area. Different consistencies and solutions are better suited for specific regions. For example, when it comes to your face, you should avoid products with ingredients that could potentially clog pores and lead to breakouts. And, while a lotion is a great all-over body treatment, if you are battling eczema on your elbows or behind your knees, you will probably want a product that is a bit thicker and has more staying power.

    Roc Dermatologic: Enydrial Hand Cream

Roc Dermatologic is more on the pricier side but I manage to find a special Xmas pack back in December. One of the sale consultant in department store said its the best hand cream she has ever used, of course that is her job to sell but because of the deal, I gave it a shot.

Apparently this ROC product is recommend for people who constantly in need to wash and use their hands in a workplace such as nurses, dishwashers and doctors etc. Similarly to the Herbacin hand cream, it contains a lot of glycerin. On a bit of cautious side to some of you, it does contain 2 types of parabens. Although it doesnt seem to bother me when I tried it.

On the plus side it does contain no fragrance and I feel a real surge of moisture penetrating through nearly all my layers of my skin. It felt like my skin was sucking it up like a sponge and feeling supple afterwards. I truly love this one! I wished it was offered in a bigger bottle but it will be very expensive so it would be a put off for some. I can see it having great potential in moisturizing dry mature skin.

    • contact with things in the environment that cause an allergy such as dust, grass, wool or pet fur

    • Rashes might thicken in a process called lichenification where it develops knots and permanent itch
    • It may darken or lighten in color
    • Rashes may become bumpy
    • Rashes in adults are more scaly: than those seen in children
    • Rashes can be permanently itchy
    • Dry skin
    • Rashes may cover much of the body
    • Rashes usually appear at the nape of the neck, or in the creases of the knees and elbows

Adults who suffered eczema as a kid but no longer experience the skin condition can still have a dry or easily-irritated skin, eye problems or hand eczema.

The appearance of skin part that is affected by eczema depends on how much it was scratched and whether it becomes infected or not. Rubbing and scratching further can irritate the skin, make itchiness worse and increase inflammation.

    How Is Eczema Treated

There is currently no cure for eczema, but there are many ways of controlling the symptoms. If you manage your eczema well with the appropriate treatment and self-care, it should improve over time. Do the following to help keep eczema under control:

    • Avoid the following:
    • Irritants, eg, soaps, detergents, solvents, ink, vegetable juice, gardening, flour.
    • Scratching scratching in response to itch can make your rash even worse, leading to more inflammation and itching. This is called the itch-scratch cycle. Read more about itching.
    • Hot baths and overheating.
    • Scratchy fabrics next to your skin instead use cotton bedding and underclothes. Soft merino wool is okay for many people.
    • Non-sedating antihistamine medications have been shown to be no better than a placebo for managing the itch of eczema.
  • Bath or shower every day to help to keep your skin moist and clean.
  • Use warm water and a soft cloth to gently soak and lift off any crusts.
  • Use a soap-free wash such as your prescribed moisturiser or aqueous cream.
  • Dont use soap and bubble bath as these make your skin dry.
  • Antiseptic baths two times a week can help.
  • Gently pat your skin dry don’t rub.
  • Use moisturisers regularly.
  • Keep your skin moist by using moisturiser daily.
  • When the eczema is active, applying moisturiser more often can help relieve the itch.
  • Put on moisturiser within 35 minutes after bathing. Moisturisers are more effective if applied immediately after a bath or shower as they lock in moisture.
