Collagen And Hyaluronic Acid Supplements For Eczema
Collagen and hyaluronic acid occur naturally in the skin . They help to build the framework that our skin sits on, keeping it plump, and in particular in the case of hyaluronic acid, keeps the skin hydrated.
Lower levels of collagen and hyaluronic acid naturally means less healthy skin, so taking them in the form of supplements or using skincare products containing them may help to support eczema prone skin.
These types of products and supplements help to rebuild damaged skin cells and in turn help to support the structure of the skin better. They can also help to prevent the dry, rough skin that is so common in eczema sufferers, especially in the winter when the weather can ravage the skin so much more.
Collagen also helps the skin to repair quicker, so if your eczema causes broken skin that can become sore and infected, a collagen supplement could benefit you.

Massage And Physical Therapy
One clinical study looking at essential oils for treating children with eczema found that massage with and without essential oils helped improve dry, scaly skin lesions. Children with this scaly, itchy skin problem seem to have less redness, scaling, and other symptoms if they had massage between flares. DO NOT use massage when skin is actively inflamed. The essential oils most often chosen by the mothers in the study included sweet marjoram, frankincense, German chamomile, myrrh, thyme, benzoin, spike lavender, and Litsea cubeba.
In one clinical study, participating in regular group sporting activities for 3 weeks improved eczema symptoms. Exercise may improve symptoms because of the positive impact it has on emotions. Sports should be avoided during the worst stages of an outbreak.
Climatotherapy uses sunlight and water as therapy. The Dead Sea in Israel is known for its healing properties, and many people with eczema go there to sit in the sun and swim in the water. Scientific studies support the benefits. A Word Of Caution On Supplements
First a note on supplements my general feeling is that you should try everything possible to get your minerals and micronutrients via fresh fruits and vegetables, whole foods, organic meats, and wild caught fish as discussed in the previous food chapters. If you do take supplements beware its the wild west out there in supplement land. I tell my patients to be very wary of supplements sold on Amazon. One study showed that the actual amount of micronutrient contained in randomly selected supplements ranged from 9% to 146% of what the bottle label stated. In the United States you can look for labels including cGMP as a minimal standard to avoid gross contamination. But for true confidence in what your taking you want approval from a third party testing company. 2 major NONPROFIT companies are in the United States are NSF and USP which both provide accurate supplement testing. 2 newer FOR-PROFIT testers have emerged including Consumerlabs and UL . Pretty much all the other verified by or approved stamps on bottles are meaningless. For this type of testing I tend to trust the NONPROFIT companies to give me unbiased data.

Severe Eczema Sufferers May Significantly Reduce Symptoms With Vitamin D Supplement
MANSOURA, Egypt With temperatures falling and winter nearing, eczema sufferers may be loading up on moisturizer and medicated creams. A new study shows there may be another form of relief for those with severe cases, however. Taking a daily vitamin D supplement may decrease eczema symptoms by a third, researchers say.
Known clinically as atopic dermatitis , eczema is the most common skin disorder in children. As many as one in five kids worldwide suffer from the condition. Flare-ups are particularly bad in the winter months.
Scientists from Mansoura University say vitamin D supplements could be a good treatment to help boost the immune system and help ease its uncomfortable symptoms among patients. These include red, itchy skin and intermittent flares which can have debilitating effects on a patients quality of life.
Vitamin D supplementation could be an effective adjuvant treatment that improves the clinical outcomes in severe atopic dermatitis, the authors write.
While vitamin D supplements are known to help people with mild to moderate eczema, the potential benefits for severe cases was unclear. The findings, in the journal Pharmacology Research and Perspectives, come from a random trial of 86 patients with eczema. Participants took either a daily vitamin D supplement or a placebo for three months, in addition to standard care.
Potential Risks Of Vitamin C Supplementation
Larger doses of oral vitamin C may cause side effects such as:
- Antiviral drugs
- Blood thinners
If youre thinking of adding vitamin C supplements to your diet, remember to consult with your doctor or dermatologist and discuss any medications you are currently taking. Although topical vitamin C-containing products have antioxidant properties, which help fight sun damage and aging, their role in fighting eczema has not been well studied.

Negligible Relationship Between Vitamin E And Skin Health
Three prospective studies suggested a negligible relationship between vitamin E and skin health. Miyake et al. studied the diet history questionnaire of 763 Japanese mother-child pairs and assessed the relationship between dietary antioxidant intake and symptoms of wheeze and AD. Analysis of the data revealed a significant inverse relationship between maternal vitamin E consumption during pregnancy and wheezing, but not AD. On the other hand, higher maternal intake of green and yellow vegetables, citrus fruits and -carotene during pregnancy seemed to confer a reduced risk of AD in the infant.
This observation was also supported by Nwaru et al. in their study using data from the Finnish population-based birth cohort nutritional study with a 5-year follow-up. The researchers proposed no significant association between maternal intake of antioxidants and the risk of atopic diseases such as AD, except for the dietary intake of magnesium, which had an independent association with protection against AD in children.
Preventing Or Treating Fine Lines And Wrinkles
Dry skin tends to look more wrinkled than well-moisturized skin. The moisturizing benefits of vitamin E oil may help the skin look more youthful and less wrinkled.
Claims that vitamin E prevents or treats wrinkles, however, are unsupported by scientific evidence. The best strategy for preventing wrinkles is to avoid direct sunlight and to wear a quality sunscreen.

Probiotics In The Treatment Of Ad
A recent meta-analysis concluded that treatment with probiotics significantly decreased the SCORAD index in children over the age of 1 year. The analysis included 25 randomized controlled trials , with a total of 1599 subjects, and found that treatment with a mixture of different bacterial species or Lactobacillus species showed greater benefit than those with Bifidobacterium species alone . Previous meta-analyses, published in 2008, had found no significant reduction in eczema symptoms as compared with placebo overall , but had noted that significant heterogeneity existed between studies and had called for further research. This heterogeneity continues to exist, which may be due to the use of different probiotic strains, the use of single probiotic strains versus multiple strains, and the use of differing placebos, with some studies utilizing prebiotic placebos.

Vitamin D Deficiency And Eczema
Vitamin D deficiency is pretty common in the U.S. today.
Some studies link lower vitamin D levels with increased rates of eczema, especially in children. Kids with moderate to severe eczema are more likely to have lower vitamin D levels than those without skin conditions, especially if they have lighter complexions.
So making sure you arent vitamin D deficient could help with your symptoms and reduce the risk of eczema in the first place.

Try Creams With Colloidal Oatmeal
According to a March 2020 double-blind study in Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology, 1 percent colloidal oatmeal cream protects the skin barrier, moisturizes and has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, all of which can help ease eczema symptoms.
Also, as a in the same journal explains, colloidal oatmeal acts as a skin prebiotic, meaning it helps encourage beneficial bacteria and microbiome diversity on the skin, which can be helpful in reducing inflammation for skin conditions like eczema.
However, Dr. Laarman notes that some people are sensitive to colloidal oatmeal, so it should only be used if it helps improve your symptoms and stopped if you notice that it makes them worse.
Some doctors also caution against using colloidal oatmeal in babies and small children who dont eat oats because of the theoretical risk of developing an oat allergy. This is based on an older paper in Allergy, from November 2007, and while there isnt much other research to support the link, many doctors err on the side of caution and suggest other eczema treatments for young children.

Do You Need More Than A Multivitamin
Many of us take some form of vitamins to try to keep our body healthy and complete with nutrients and minerals that we need for strong bones, a healthy immune system and everything in between. We even get our kids to take them. But what about our skin? Eczema shows up as a skin disorder and can really be unpleasant so why dont we make the health of our skin just as much of a priority? Why dont we look into vitamins on a deeper level than just blindly taking a multivitamin each day?

What The Evidence Says
The American Academy of Dermatology Association advises that there is not enough scientific evidence to recommend using any vitamin or mineral to treat eczema. It says vitamin D supplements may be helpful during the winter, but people should be careful about how much they take because higher doses can be toxic.
However, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology highlights that there has been a recent increase in studies associating vitamin D deficiency with eczema. Therefore, if a doctor diagnoses vitamin D deficiency, they may prescribe supplements.
A of 21 publications found that lower vitamin D levels were associated with eczema severity, and supplementation improved symptoms in 67% of people.
1520 micrograms , or 600800 international units , of vitamin D daily, and children need 1015 mcg depending on their age. People get vitamin D from the sun or food, but they can also consider taking a supplement.
Two forms of vitamin D are available as a supplement. Vitamin D2 and D3 may be part of a multivitamin and mineral supplement. Alternatively, retailers sell them as single supplements.
However, some vitamin D3 is unsuitable for vegans because manufacturers derive it from sheeps wool. Instead, vegans can opt for D3 made from lichen or D2.
Supplementing too much vitamin D can be harmful, and the advises that very high levels of vitamin D in the blood can cause the following:
- nausea or vomiting
- kidney stones
Other Factors To Consider
Eczema is a complex skin condition there may be many factors contributing to, or worsening eczema, e.g. getting older, or even sweating. Remember to protect the skin from drying out, as this increases itching, redness and inflammation. A rich, natural moisturiser such as Neem Cream will soothe the symptoms of dry, itchy skin and strengthen the skin’s barrier function.
Here are a couple of A.Vogel product options that use plant-based forms of vitamin D3, sourced from reindeer lichen:
Balance Drink contains a mix of electrolytes designed to help reduce fatigue and support normal muscle function. It contains 200 IU in each strawberry tasting sachet.
Immune Support tablets are a combination of nutrients that have been shown to reduce tiredness during bouts of illness and support immunity. I like these as they contain that nice edible flower nasturtium that is a rich source of glucosinolates. Each tablet contains 200 IU of vitamin D.

Vitamin B12 And Eczema
Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, has also been studied in eczema. Specifically, topical Vitamin B12 formulations have been studied. Thesestudies have shown improvement in eczema symptoms when cream containing 0.07% Vitamin B12 was applied to the skin.
Topical steroids, which are often used to treat mild to moderate eczema, can also help to lower nitric oxide levels in the skin. Importantly, long-term use of steroids may lead to arebound increase in nitric oxide levels when the steroid is stopped.
In turn, this means the skin discomfort, redness and swelling linked to eczema may increase. It is not known whether Vitamin B12 topical creams may cause the same results after discontinuation.
