Managing Eczema In Winter And Year Round: A Parents Guide

Red, crusty, dry patches can be common on a baby’s skin, particularly in winter, and cause concern for parents. Such symptoms can be treated, however, and many babies and children do outgrow the dry, itchy skin of atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema.

We spoke with pediatric dermatologist Katherine Puttgen to learn more.

Atopic Dermatitis Pictures In Adults

An exeme-like reaction appears only in acute periods. Atopic dermatitis in adults is less prone to an island-inflammatory reaction and less responsive to allergens. Symptoms of atopic dermatitis in adults are very clearly represented by skin itching. Combed skin becomes lichenified. Most patients trace the relationship between the onset of exacerbations and stressful situations. The nature of the rashes varies depending on the type of disease: for example, contact dermatitis is usually always dry on the body and sometimes wet between the fingers.

Severe atopic dermatitis on hands is expressed by characteristic dryness, roughened rough skin. Atopic dermatitis in adults turns into a lighter look in the summer and when visiting the southern resorts. However, due to contact in the warm period with many plants, their pollen, atopic dermatitis can occur in adults on their legs.

Some Types Of Skin Cancer Can Look Like Pimples

One of the most alarming types of acne-mimickers is a type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma.

âBasal cell carcinoma is the most common skin cancer and is often mistaken for a pimple. Pimples usually resolve over days to weeks. If instead, it lasts several months, you should see a board-certified dermatologist as it might need to be biopsied to rule out skin cancer,â Dr. Downes told Insider.

The good news is that basal cell carcinoma is considered a low-risk skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, it is only life-threatening in exceedingly rare cases.

âThe risk of it spreading in the body is close to zero. It is just locally destructive to adjacent tissues,â explained Dr. Downes.

The typical treatment involves surgically removing the affected area. Even though basal cell carcinoma isnât usually an aggressive type of cancer, it can result in scarring if left untreated for too long. Get any suspicious marks or bumps checked sooner rather than later to catch skin cancer early.

Dermatitis Herpetiformis Rash Symptoms

Dermnet/Creative Commons

Although dermatitis herpetiformis can form anywhere on your body, its most frequent locations include the elbows, knees, buttocks, lower back and the back of the neck. In most cases , it’s one of the itchiest skin conditions you can experience.

This photo shows a close-up of the rash, with its distinctive tiny reddish-purple bumps. The dermatitis herpetiformis bumps usually take several days to heal , and once healed, those bumps will leave behind small purple marks that last for weeks or months.

People with long-standing dermatitis herpetiformis usually have continuously reddened, purple-dotted skin where their rash occurs.

When dermatitis herpetiformis is severe, the lesions often are topped with clear, fluid-filled blisters that pop easily when scratched . The liquid in those blisters contains white blood cells, which are drawn to the area as a result of the autoimmune attack on the skin.

Why Did My Child Develop Eczema

The exact cause of eczema is unknown. Researchers do know that children who develop eczema do so because of a combination of genes and environmental triggers. When something outside the body switches on the immune system, skin cells dont behave as they should causing flare ups.

We also know that children who come from families with a history of atopic dermatitis, asthma, or hay fever are more likely to develop atopic dermatitis.

How Is Eczema Treated During Pregnancy

What Does Eczema Look Like? Dermatitis Rash Treatment

In most cases, pregnancy-induced eczema can be controlled with moisturizers and ointments. If the eczema is severe enough, your doctor may prescribe a steroid ointment to apply to your skin. Topical steroids appear to be safe during pregnancy, but talk to your doctor about any concerns. They can help you understand your treatment options and associated risks. There is some evidence that UV light therapy may also help clear up the eczema.

Avoid any treatments that involve methotrexate or psoralen plus ultraviolet A during pregnancy. They can harm the fetus.

You can also take steps to help prevent eczema or stop it from getting worse:

  • Take warm, moderate showers instead of hot showers.
  • Keep your skin hydrated with moisturizers.
  • Apply moisturizer directly after you shower.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing that wont irritate your skin. Choose clothing made from natural products, like cotton. Wool and hemp clothing may cause additional irritation to your skin.
  • Avoid harsh soaps or body cleaners.
  • If you live in a dry climate, consider using a humidifier in your home. Heaters can also dry out the air in your home.
  • Drink water throughout the day. Its beneficial not only to your health and the health of your baby, but also to your skin.

Whats The Difference Between Dermatitis And Psoriasis

Psoriasis and dermatitis can appear similar. Both cause patches of red skin. However, in psoriasis, the scales are thick and the edges of those scales are well-defined.

Discuss with your healthcare provider your questions about which type of skin condition you have. You can have more than one skin condition at a time. Treatments for one may not work for the other.

How Can Parents Help

Help prevent or treat eczema by keeping your childs skin from getting dry or itchy and avoiding triggers that cause flare-ups. Try these suggestions:

  • Kids should take short baths or showers in warm water. Use mild unscented soaps or non-soap cleansers and pat the skin dry before putting on cream or ointment. Teens should use unscented makeup and oil-free facial moisturizers.
  • Ask your doctor if its OK to use oatmeal soaking products in the bath to help control itching.
  • Kids should wear soft clothes that breathe, such as those made from cotton. Wool or polyester may be too harsh or irritating.
  • Keep your childs fingernails short to prevent skin damage from scratching. Try having your child wear comfortable, light gloves to bed if scratching at night is a problem.
  • Kids should avoid becoming overheated, which can lead to flare-ups.
  • Kids should drink plenty of water, which adds moisture to the skin.
  • Get rid of known allergens in your household and help your child avoid others, like pollen, mold, and tobacco smoke.
  • Stress can make eczema worse. Help your child find ways to deal with stress .

What Does Eczema Look Like On Black Skin

Eczema Look Like Ringworm

Since Black people come in an array of shades, the appearance of eczema can vary based on skin tone. However, there are some tell-tale signs that the condition is present.

“Eczema on Black skin presents itself as ashen grey, purple or violaceous, red-brown or dark brown,” Dr. Okereke explains. “On adults, it can present itself on the inner or outer arms, crux of the elbow, neck, eyelids, and hands to name a few. On infants, it may appear on the cheeks, neck, and hands.”

The MD adds that while most commonly, eczema is thought to show up as patches of dryness, it can pop up in other forms as well. “It can appear as little bumps, papules, thickened plaques, lichenoids, or what we call a follicular presentation, and this presentation is more common in persons with darker skin tones,” she says.

Tips For Reducing Outbreaks

Here are a few ways to prevent eczema flare-ups and manage symptoms:

  • Apply cool compresses to your skin, or take a colloidal oatmeal or baking soda bath to relieve the itch.
  • Moisturize your skin daily with a rich, oil-based cream or ointment to form a protective barrier against the elements. Apply the cream right after you get out of the shower or bath to seal in moisture.
  • After you bathe, gently blot your skin with a soft towel. Never rub.
  • Avoid scratching. You could cause an infection.
  • Use fragrance-free detergents, cleansers, makeup, and other skin care products.
  • Wear gloves and protective clothing whenever you handle chemicals.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes made from soft fibers, like cotton.

You should also avoid any known triggers.

Treatments For Weeping Eczema

If your skin is weeping and infected, your treatment will depend on the type of infection you have.

Bacterial infections are usually treated with antibiotics. Antibiotics may be administered as a cream, ointment, tablet, or syrup. Sometimes, antibiotics are given along with a topical steroid.

Viral infections are typically treated with antiviral tablets. If your viral infection is severe, you may need to receive these medicines intravenously in a hospital setting.

Fungal infections are helped with antifungal creams or ointments. These are usually combined with topical steroids.

Its important that you continue to take your usual oral or topical medicines for eczema unless your doctor tells you to stop treatment.
