Short courses of topical steroids are usually safe and cause no problems. Problems may develop if topical steroids are used for long periods, or if short courses of stronger steroids are repeated often. The main concern is if strong steroids are used on a long-term basis. Side-effects from mild topical steroids are uncommon.

Side-effects from topical steroids can either be local or systemic. Local means just affecting that bit of skin and systemic means affecting the whole person.

    Appropriate Use Of Topical Corticosteroids

According to treatment guidelines recently developed in Europe, Asia, and the United States, topical corticosteroid remain the mainstay of treatment for adults and children with atopic dermatitis, even in severe cases in which they may be used in combination with systemic therapies. Topical corticosteroids are recommended when patients have failed to respond to a consistent eczema skin care regimen, including the regular use of moisturizers , appropriate anti-bacterial measures, and trying to eliminate any possible allergens that may be contributing to the underlying problem.

    Goals for treating atopic dermatitis:

  • Prevent flares: Practice a consistent skin care regimen. Use gentle, non-irritating products, use moisturizers regularly, reduce bacterial colonization and infection , and identify and eliminate any possible allergens, irritants or triggers.
  • Induce remission: Use topical corticosteroids once or twice daily for up to 14 days. Once or twice daily application is recommended for most preparations. More frequent administration does not provide better results. Low-potency steroids should be used on the face and with caution around the eyes.
  • Rescue flares using TCS: the sooner applied, the more quickly controlledthen back to maintenance therapy. Your doctor may prescribe a stronger steroid to be used immediately for flares for a few days and then ask you to go to a weaker steroid once the flare has improved.

    Precautions Before Using Topical Steroids

    • Are you are taking or using any other medicines? This includes any other creams or medicated soaps you are using that are available to buy without a prescription.
    • Have you ever had an allergic reaction to a medicine?

If so, its important that you tell your doctor or pharmacist before you start using topical steroids. Sometimes a medicine isnt suitable for a person with certain conditions or it can only be used with extra care.

    Which Cortisone Should I Use

The skin on your face is thinner than the skin on the rest of your body, therefore a mild cortisone isused on the face and a moderate to potent cortisone is used on the body where the skin is thicker.

    Face: Sigmacort, Dermaid, hydrocortisone.

Body: Advantan Fatty Ointment, Diprosone, Elocon

Sometimes your childs eczema may get infected and they may need antibiotics. This looks like increased oozing and yellow crusting in the eczema. Sometimes blisters filled with pus may be present. The cortisone applications do not work when there is infection so your doctor may prescribe a course of oral antibiotics to treat the infection.

How To Avoid Topical Steroid Withdrawal

Topical steroid manufacturers have known about topical steroid addiction for decades, which is why doctors usually advise you to gradually cut down on use rather than stopping suddenly. Suddenly stopping use of topical steroids is sort of like running a marathon and avoiding training advice such as drink water/stay hydrated. It can result in serious side effects.

When going off topical steroids, especially if you have used them for long periods of time, you absolutely need to train your blood vessels to cope with the crazy chemical changes that are going to occur.

TSW Program: You can train your blood vessels like you would train your muscles. For example:

Do you see a pattern forming?

    Constrict, dilate, constrict, dilate.

Its like working a muscle where you flex as you lift a weight and then relax. The muscle gets stronger. This is how you train your blood vessels to constrict again after dilating excessively. This exercising the blood vessels can reduce the risk TSW/red skin syndrome and speed up recovery from topical steroid addiction. As previously mentioned, supplements that reduce nitric oxide levels in the blood can also help to ease the withdrawal process.

These supplements include vitamin B12 and taurine as they reduce nitric oxide levels in the body.

Skin Friend AM contains vitamin B12 and other nutrients suitable for people with skin inflammation.

Eczema. Even the word sounds irritating, like an itch we want to scratch .

Especially so during the winter, when the cold temps have us reaching for the best dry skin products under the sun or the best body lotions known to man.

But, with eczema comes the urgency for near-instantaneous relief. Smooth skin is the goal, but product choices usually have to be specific to sensitive skin types and, of course, must be effective to head toward smoother skin.

Some signs that eczema is starting to occur is if your skin is feeling dry, rough, red or flaky,Tiffany Libby, MD, FAAD, FACMS, a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon at Brown Dermatology in Rhode Island, told the Post. When eczema becomes severe, you may notice more extensive involvement of your skin and or cracks in the skin, which can be painful and may risk becoming infected.

To help solve the tangible side effects of eczema, we consulted Dr. Libby and two other dermatologists on the best eczema creams, treatments, ointments, balms and everything in between. But first, take a look at the following FAQ.

How Do I Know Which Potency Of Topical Steroid Im Using

In the UK, topical steroid preparations are divided into four categories according to how strong or potent they are. The terms used are mild, moderately potent, potent and very potent. The potency of topical steroids is determined by the amount of vasoconstriction they produce. It also relates to the degree to which the topical steroid inhibits inflammation, and its potential for causing side effects.

It can be difficult for the person with eczema or the parent of a child with eczema to work out the potency of a product, since the labelled percentage of steroid on the packaging does not relate to the potency and may sometimes imply a less potent product. The potency of the topical steroid may be stated in the patient information leaflet inside the packaging.

One way of understanding the strength of different steroid preparations is to note that moderately potent is twice as potent as hydrocortisone 1% potent is 10 times more potent and very potent 50 times more potent. If you are not sure of the potency of a steroid preparation, ask your pharmacist.

    What Are Topical Steroids

Steroids also known as corticosteroids belong to a group of medications known as glucocorticoids. Topical steroid is an anti-inflammatory preparation. Apart from being anti-inflammatory, it also acts by being immunosuppressive, anti-proliferative and vasoconstrictive. Steroid containing topical products include creams, ointments and lotions. Creams work best in treating moist or weeping areas of eczematous skin. They are usually white. Ointments are best to treat dry and thickened areas of skin. They are usually clear. Lotions are used to treat hairy regions such as scalp. They are thin creams.

Steroids work by reducing the inflammation of your skin. They are used for many skin conditions and eczema is one of them. Prescription steroid cream for eczema is effective in treating eczema.

There are several types of topical steroids and they are categorized according to their strength. Greater the potency or strength, more effective it will be in reducing inflammation but on the other hand side effects will be more with continued use.

  • Mild Ex: 1% Hydrocortisone
  • Potent Ex: Betamethasone valerate, Mometasone furoate
  • Very potent Ex: Clobetasol propionate

    germanynews02: [44+] Eczema Cream Steroid

Topical steroid creams are anti-inflammatory medicines which means they reduce redness and inflammation caused by eczema and other skin conditions.

When your body suffers from an allergic reaction or irritation , it releases inflammatory chemicals in response. These chemicals make blood vessels widen and cause the skin to become inflamed, swollen, and itchy. This can lead to your skin feeling very dry and painful, as well as looking red and irritated.

Topical steroid creams inhibit the bodys natural response by preventing cells from releasing large amounts of these inflammatory chemicals. This makes topical steroid creams one of the most effective ways to help treat and control the symptoms of eczema and other skin problems.

Topical corticosteroids rarely pose a large risk of side effects, but this depends on the strength of the use of topical steroids in question. After all, more potent topical corticosteroids are more likely to have adverse effects like burning or stinging on certain areas of the skin.

Here are the most common side effects associated with topical corticosteroids:

    • Stretch marks, which are often permanent
    • Acne rosacea, which is a condition causing flushed reddening of the face
    • Perioral dermatitis, which affects the mouth

    What Is An Eczema Flare

An eczema flare-up can affect a persons everyday life. The discomfort can make it hard to sleep and focus, and some people may feel self-conscious due to the appearance of their skin.

Environmental factors often trigger flare-ups. Although eczema triggers vary from person to person, some of the most common ones include:

    • irritants, such as perfume or disinfectants
    • stressful situations
    • changes in the weather
    • food allergies

It is not always possible to avoid potential triggers. As people learn more about their eczema, they can try to stay away from their primary triggers.

    Steroid Cream Side Effects

Steroid creams work wonders for conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and itchy rashes. Also known as topical corticosteroids, creams like hydrocortisone are available without a prescription to help with the redness and inflammation common with bug bites, allergies, and other rashes. However, the downside is steroid cream side effects.

*How do steroid cream medications work?

Steroid cream medications work by turning down the bodys inflammation system. Normally, when you get a rash, there is redness and possibly itching, heat or swelling. Those are signs of inflammation. The steroid cream stops some of the cascade of signals in the body that make the inflammation continue. Its like putting a dam in the stream, blocking the signal from reaching the parts of the body that would release the redness.

How Should Eczema Cream Be Used

Different eczema creams are used in different ways. How and when you apply your eczema cream will depend upon whether youre going through a flare-up, how bad your symptoms are, and where on your body the affected areas are.

If youre not going through a flare-up of symptoms, or if your eczema is very mild, you should simply use emollients. Emollients should be used every day at least twice, but ideally more often, especially if you have very dry skin. You should use a large amount and apply it all over your skin, smoothing it in the same direction your hair grows.

If you are experiencing a flare-up, you should use emollients and topical corticosteroids. Apply a layer of emollient first, wait for it to soak into the skin, and then use your corticosteroid cream or lotion. This should be applied only to the affected areas, as directed in the products patient information leaflet. Typically, you will have to apply corticosteroids once or twice a day.

Other things to consider include the following:

You should always speak to a pharmacist or doctor before you start using eczema creams, to make sure youre using the right kind at the right strength.

How Should I Use Triamcinolone Topical

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use the medicine exactly as directed.

Triamcinolone topical cream, lotion, ointment, or spray is for use only on the skin. Triamcinolone dental paste is applied directly onto an ulcer inside the mouth and left in place.

    Do not swallow triamcinolone topical.

Wash your hands before and after using triamcinolone topical, unless you are using this medicine to treat the skin on your hands.

Apply a thin layer of medicine to the affected skin. Do not apply this medicine over a large area of skin unless your doctor has told you to.

Do not cover the treated skin area with a bandage or other covering unless your doctor tells you to. Covering treated areas can increase the amount of medicine absorbed through your skin and may cause harmful effects.

If you are treating the diaper area, do not use plastic pants or tight-fitting diapers.

To use the dental paste, press a small dab onto the mouth ulcer but do not rub in the medicine. The dab will form a thin film that should be left in place for several hours. Triamcinolone dental paste is usually applied at bedtime and/or after meals. Follow your doctors instructions.

You should stop using this medicine once your symptoms are controlled.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Clean gently. Soap can irritate your skin, but washing with water alone may not be enough, especially if your face is oily. Use a gentle non-soap cleanser or a medical emollient instead. Pat dry with a soft towel.

Watch the temperature. Use only cool — not hot — water on your face, and for as little time as possible.

Skip makeup.Donât use cosmetics on irritated skin.

Why Do I Need To Use A Steroid Cream For My Eczema

Eczema is a chronic condition. That means it is not curable and has to be controlled. It is a condition where the skin is constantly inflamed. For over 50 years, topical steroids have been known to be highly effective in controlling this inflammation. There is no other medication that works as well or as efficiently. One of the main functions of skin is to maintain a barrier to the outside world. In eczema the barrier is damaged. Steroids rapidly repair the damaged skin barrier without irritating the skin.
