Staphylococcus Aureus And Eczema
One time in college I cultured my own skin microbiome out of curiosity. I took samples from various patches of eczema on my body, grew up the microbes in broth, and isolated them on Petri dishes. Guess what? The isolated microbiomes of my eczema patches all had something in common: they were predominately made up of Staphylococcus aureus. Now let me clarify, I didnt have a staph infection. Staphylococcus aureus had become the most popular part of my normal skin microbiome, especially on all the itchy parts of my skin. All the parts of my skin where I put steroid cream. The chemicals and preservatives in the cream basically wiped out all the beneficial microbes on my skin, leaving my skin mostly colonized with resistant Staph aureus. It gets worse too did you know Staph aureus bacteria can produce delta toxin, a toxin that causes *you guessed it* eczema and atopic dermatitis.
I started asking so many questions about the root causes of my eczema. I would spend hours on google scholar to read published papers on eczema and staph aureus. There were a lot of nights where I was up until 2 am reading about the causes of eczema trying to figure out what things related to my own eczema But most of the information I found still said that eczema is incurable. I wasnt going to give up though.

When Vaseline Is Bad For Eczema
Vaseline is bad for eczema if youre experiencing the 2nd type of eczema I described. The problem with eczema is that it likes to breathe. Once you apply Vaseline your skin has a seal over it. It isnt breathable and can actually suffocate pores.
Vaseline can also be difficult to clean from skin . If Im experiencing an eczema outbreak or a general worsening of eczema, Ill never apply Vaseline.
Ill wait for it to calm down hopefully, a few weeks and once it is dry and not red I feel its safe to use Vaseline. There are a few other reasons I wont use Vaseline for my eczema. These include:
- Oil can stain pillows and sheets
- Can stain clothes
- Gives off an unnatural shiny appearance if used on the face
- If eczema is itchy my hands will spread the oil to other places
- If Ill be showering/bathing within a few hours
