Medical Treatment For Eczema

How Do I Use Tea Tree Oil for Eczema?

Eczema cant be cured. But it can be managed by preventing and treating flare-ups as soon as they appear.

If your childs skin is inflamed and itchy, theyll probably need some corticosteroid ointment or cream. For mild eczema, you can buy mild corticosteroids over the counter at your pharmacy. The most common is hydrocortisone 1% cream. For more serious eczema or if the over-the-counter products arent working, youll need to see your GP to get a prescription for a stronger corticosteroid.

Other eczema treatments include pimecrolimus, a non-steroidal cream. Doctors might prescribe this cream for children with mild to moderate eczema on the face and in body folds.

If your child is scratching at a rash, you could ask your pharmacist or GP about using an antihistamine medication for a few days. Together with a corticosteroid cream, this might give your child some rest and help the flare-up to settle.

If your childs eczema rash gets infected, your doctor will prescribe a course of oral antibiotics.

  • The Tea Tree Oil Relieves Itching Skin

Itching is probably the most significant indication of eczema. Any effective anti-eczema treatment should, therefore, have the property of reducing itching.

A 2006 review of the literature on the use of the tea tree oil for eczema treatment and other cutaneous medical conditions showed that the essential oil was an effective remedy for an itchy rash on the skin, which is characteristic of eczema.

The application of a skin shampoo containing 5% tea tree oil showed significant improvements in the itchiness of the skin in patients suffering from the disease. These findings have been corroborated by multiple studies, further suggesting that eczema is a practical solution for the itchy skin.

Natural Oils For Eczema: Which Ones Are Safe And Effective

Natural oil has been used in skin care for centuries. A good number of natural oils have beneficial fatty acids that help to repair the skins natural barrier, which is defective in patients with eczema.

But not all natural oils are good for our skin. Some can be irritating and may even worsen eczema. The plant source, composition and the ways that natural oils are extracted determine their benefit and harm.

Cold-pressed fixed oils are made by extracting oil from seeds or nuts without adding chemicals or heat, and therefore tend to be safer for skin use.

On the other hand, essential oils are extracted through steam-distillation of aromatic flowers or leaves. Heat and chemicals added during essential oil extraction can produce irritating compounds, and therefore should be avoided for skin use.

Several natural oils have been found to be safe and beneficial alternative moisturizers. Virgin coconut oil contains monolaurin, a fatty acid that mitigates Staphylococcus aureus colonization that can typically develop in eczema patients.

Virgin coconut oil is also superior in improving eczema compared to mineral oil . Virgin sunflower seed oil has anti-inflammatory properties to help soothe itchy and inflamed eczema skin, and can improve skin hydration and preserve the integrity of the skins natural barrier.

What Causes Cradle Cap In Newborns

The mothers hormones are likely to be the cause of the cradle cap. Before birth, these hormones cross the placenta. The oil glands in the skin become over stimulated by the hormones. More and more oil is released by them. This causes the cap to fall off.

If the baby is born with a crown cap, it may be a sign of a problem with the umbilical cord. If the cord is not attached to the uterus, a baby may not be able to latch on to its mothers breast.

Why Eczema And Essential Oils Are A Poor Mix

How To Treat Eczema With Tea Tree Oil

There are several reasons people with eczema should skip essential oils:

    • Ingredients may vary. Theyâre usually made through a steam distillation process that uses heat and chemicals to extract their scent and other properties. The result is a highly concentrated liquid mix of chemicals that can include terpenes, aldehydes, alcohols, esters, ethers, ketones, and more.
    • Theyâre unregulated. In addition, the FDA places most of these products in the same category as cosmetics, which means they donât regulate quality or advertising claims. Thereâs no way to tell, for example, if the oils you buy were made from plants treated with pesticides or contain only the ingredients listed on the label.
    • They raise your risk of skin irritation. Your skin is even more likely to react when you have eczema. Thatâs because the inflammation it causes disturbs and can leave tiny breaks in your skin barrier. This makes it easier for your skin to absorb the irritants and allergens in essential oils.

If you have eczema you shouldnât use essential oils in any form. They can cause skin reactions even when you mix small amounts with a milder oil, add a few drops to your bath water, or use products that list them as ingredients.

You should also avoid diffusers that release their scent — and other compounds — into the air you breathe. The airborne particles can cause skin reactions and other symptoms in people who are sensitive to them.

    A Rediscovered Ancient Wisdom

    tea tree oil for eczema

While pharmaceuticals have been around for about a 100 years, our ancestors relied on essential oils for first aid problems before that.

Aboriginal tribes in Australia have known of the tea trees healing qualities for thousands of years, primarily using it for its antiseptic properties and prized healing ability.

During World War II, Australian soldiers were issued this natural oil as one of the prime components in their first aid kits.

The commercial tea tree oil industry originated in the 1920s when Arthur Penfold, an Australian, reported that tea tree oil had promise as it exhibited powerful antiseptic properties. Upon disclosing his discovery, scientists began testing and conducting research on the oils properties.

The profound results made their way into medical and scientific journals of the day, concluding that tea tree oil was a near perfect antiseptic. Mechanization, established in the 1970s, allowed for the large scale production of tea tree oil that weve come to know today.

At the end of the day, some studies suggest essential oils like borage oil and tea tree oil may help ease inflammation and lower the risk of skin infection, but we dont know how well they work for this skin condition.

Whats more, some essential oils may irritate the skin and make eczema and atopic dermatitis symptoms worse.

Contact eczema or dermatitis, unlike an irritation eczema, stems from an allergy to a specific ingredient or chemical, according to the National Eczema Foundation. This can cause itchy blistering rashes on the skin. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about developing contact eczema from essential oils. They may recommend performing a patch test on a normal area of skin first to see if you develop a reaction.

Tea Tree Oil Is Safe And Easy To Use

Applying tea tree oil with a carrier oil provides a safeand effective way to use the product.Fractionated coconut oil is an all-natural carrier oil that readily absorbs into the skin, making it ideal for topical therapies. It is completely soluble with all essential oils and is colorless, odorless, and will not stain or go rancid.

While regular coconut oil can also be used, it is not quite as convenient. Regular coconut oil is solid at room temperature, making it hard for mixing and leaves a greasy feeling on the skin.

Fractionated coconut oil serves 3 purposes:

  • Provides a medium that helps increase absorption of the tea tree oil into the skin.
  • Helps spread the oil over a larger surface of the skin
  • Lowers the chance of skin irritation
