How To Care For Sensitive Skin

Laundry Products Must Haves | For Sensitive, Eczema Prone Skin

Whether you experience seasonal skin sensitivities or have year-round, persistent issues, having sensitive skin requires some extra care and protection, even in the laundry room. In the U.S., 45 percent of adults have either âsensitiveâ or âvery sensitiveâ skin¹. People with sensitive skin are especially susceptible to detergent allergy, so it is even more important that they take extra care of their clothes and other items that come in regular contact with skin, like clothing, sheets and towels. For many, that extra care includes using a detergent free of dyes and perfumes.

Seal Of Acceptance Disclaimers

Seal of Acceptance products, including personal care products and laundry care products, may contain potential irritants at concentration levels thought to be insignificant for most individuals. Some people with eczema may still find they do not tolerate certain products or certain ingredients. Rarely, some individuals will have an allergy to specific ingredients that are well tolerated by others. ESC recommends individuals seek advice on product selection from their health care provider.

The Eczema Society of Canadas Seal of Acceptance does not constitute medical advice and relies upon available scientific evidence at the time of issuance of the Seal of Acceptance.

Skin Care Products ESC recommends that individuals patch test any new product on a small area of skin, before applying it to a large area of skin. Should irritation occur, do not use the product and see your health care professional. Note that cleansers should never be left on the skin.

Over the Counter Drugs ESC reminds consumers that all drugs, including OTC drugs, have risks and potential side effects. Consumers are reminded to read and follow the instructions and consult with their health care provider before using any medication and if their skin is worsening.

Red Skin Syndrome Is Not Eczema

I joined the Eczema Association of Australasia after becoming desperate for an end to my itchy, red skin. I was first diagnosed with eczema around the age of 20 and prescribed a mild steroid cream for the rash on my chest. The rash cleared and the unfinished tube of cream sat idle in my bathroom cupboard for years. In my late twenties and thirties, I occasionally developed a small patch of dry skin, which I sometimes treated with a topical steroid cream or with a nonsteroidal emollient. It wasnt until my early forties that my skin rash become problematic.

Is My Skin Allergic To Clothing

No, in the case of atopic eczema, you simply have an intolerance. Certain clothes provoke patches due to their material or by rubbing against the skin.

Its also possible to have contact allergies to components in certain clothing items, such as nickel in belt buckles or jean rivets, or even to materials used to make shoes or soles , which could trigger eczema. Certain synthetic dyes can also cause eczema. Here, we are not dealing with atopic eczema, but rather a clear case of allergic contact eczema.

Some of the latter are adults whose eczema has lingered on, while others will have eczema for the first time in adulthood. Some people will have had eczema for the first time as babies or young children and then experience several years of remission only to have the eczema re-appear suddenly and sometimes severely in their adult years. Laundry Care For People With Eczema

People with eczema should take special care with the items that come into direct contact with their skin. In addition to the fabrics themselves, the products you use to care for them can potentially cause a reaction with your skin. Dyes, perfumes, fragrances, and detergent that are left on the fabric after washing and drying may irritate sensitive skin, so avoid them.

Skip Fabric Softener And Dryer Sheets

Fabric softener and dryer sheets are almost always fragranced, which can trigger eczema, says Cohen. In addition, these products introduce more chemicals that someone could potentially be allergic to, Cohen adds.

Fabric softeners may contain methylisothiazolinone, a common allergen that can cause real trouble for the skin, says Lio. When in doubt, avoid both fabric softener and dryer sheets.

One past study found that fabric softeners helped some people with dry skin because they made clothes soft to the touch . Instead of going the fabric softener route, consider buying clothes made of softer fabrics .

    The Best Powder Detergent

If you prefer to use a powder laundry detergent, this one by Charlie’s Soap is an excellent option that’s free of fragrance, brighteners, fillers, and dyes . And though it’s made with only four-plant based and biodegradable ingredients, it’s still a powerful and hypoallergenic cleaner that has earned more than 2,500 five-star ratings from Amazon users who rave that their clothes come out looking “like new” after one use. Using the suggested 1 tablespoon dose, the bag featured here should give you enough soap for 100 loads of laundry. Just note, if you’re running a cold cycle, the water needs to be above 55 degrees Fahrenheit for the best results . Bonus: The brand suggests the powder can also be used to clean residue off of the interior surfaces of your washing machine itself â just throw a scoop of it in with a load of rags and run a hot cycle.

One helpful review: “I did a lot of research on products when I was pregnant. When it came to laundry I needed something that worked, and was safe for me and my baby. That meant scent and dye free. But I also wanted something that was safe for the environment. I have sensitive skin and turns out my baby does too. I tried a few different soaps but this was the only one that didn’t trigger my eczema. My clothes are clean, works well on stains and no residue to irritate my skin. I’m happy and won’t use anything else.”

    Teenagers Who Have Eczema

Hope for Eczema: New Treatment Developments Part 1

The teenage years can sometimes be the worst for people with eczema. This is not because the condition gets worse at this time: it can get better. As the skin gets greasier the eczema often improves and it is not uncommon for someone who has had eczema severely as a child to become much better at puberty while his non-eczematous friend discovers zits in a big way!

On the other hand, some people find that they have been free of eczema for a while only for it to come back in adolescence: others develop the condition for the first time during the teenage years. It is a very individual condition.

When my son was first diagnosed with eczema, laundry was the furthest thing from my mind. We went through countless tests, dietary changes, shopping for the best creams, sleepless nights, etc., etc.

I didnt realize until much later that our laundry detergent, even though it was natural, was irritating my sons skin. It wasnt the trigger in his case, but it certainly wasnt helping matters. When I removed the detergents and made some other changes to our laundry routine, I saw a lot less irritation.

Here are a few things I learned along the way.

    Can Laundry Soap Trigger Dermatitis

Preservatives and fragrances in cleaning soap can trigger dermatitis. They can irritate skin that is already sensitive in children with atopic dermatitis. These chemicals are used to remove stains, prevent bacterial growth, control odor, but unfortunately, they can cause allergic reactions. Some of these chemicals include: methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone and limonene.

Limit Your Use Of Fabric Softeners

Tide +Downy Free, Liquid Laundry Detergent, Recognized by ...

Fabric softeners contain a number of synthetic fragrances and are often poorly tolerated by atopic skin. Try placing clothes in the dryer, which makes clothes softer and more supple. If you do not have a dryer, opt for fabric softeners containing very few fragrances. Even still, try to avoid using them as much as possible.Better to go without and have stiff clothes rather than have soft clothes infused with chemicals from these products.

Liquid Detergent Is Better Than Tablets

Liquid formulas are preferred, as they dissolve more easily in water. They also reduce any potential residue left behind from insufficient rinsing. Furthermore, the powders and tablets are caustic. Plus, with liquid detergent, you can use less than the recommended dose, which is always more than you need. A heaping tablespoon is sufficient for a load.

When washing your childs clothes, try setting an extra rinse cycle to remove all the detergent.
