Eczema on the face: 11 tips from a dermatologist| Dr Dray

There is growing evidence that allergens introduced into the body through the skin can lead to the later development of food allergy, asthma and hay fever. Aggressively treating eczema in children and taking steps to restore normal skin barrier function may lower the risk of future development of these conditions.

What Foods Should I Eat Or Avoid To Reduce My Risk Of Eczema

The connection between eczema and food allergies is unclear. If you have food allergies, then one of the reasons why you must avoid that food is that it may cause or worsen dermatitis. Examples of common allergies include peanuts, dairy, eggs, sugar, alcohol and gluten. Pay attention to what you eat. If your eczema flares up after you eat a certain food, then you might have an allergy to it.

If you dont have a food allergy then there are no foods, including chicken, that will cause or worsen your eczema.

How To Get Rid Of Eczema On Your Face

Luckily for anyone with eczema, finding relief from an itchy red face can be as simple as finding eczema-friendly skincare products at your local drugstore.

First, stock up on 1 percent hydrocortisone cream . Dab that over your eczema patches, rinse off gently after 10 minutes, and then follow with a rich moisturizer to seal in hydration. Note: You should only use hydrocortisone for a week max at a time. So if you’re not seeing results, head to a derm.

You’ll also want to swap out your skincare routine for products that will hydrate you without making your problem worse. Shah recommends avoiding harsh or irritating ingredients, like fragrances, dyes, exfoliants like glycolic acid, and plant extracts. Look instead for gentle, moisturizing ingredients like colloidal oatmeal, ceramides, and shea butter.

Not sure which drugstore products are actually worth testing on your quest for an eczema-free face? Here are a few of Shahs picks:

How To Treat Eczema On Your Face

Its common and generally safe to treat body eczema with topical steroids, but you need to be careful applying the same products to your face, says Kenneth Mark, MD, a dermatologist practicing in New York City and Aspen, CO. Steroids can thin your skin if used improperly.

Thats why its important to start with more mild, moisturizing products, then go from there. The goal is to restore the barrier function of your skin without causing more irritation, Dr. Mark says.

One extra challenge when treating facial eczema: You probably use a lot of products on your face that you dont use on your body, and some of those products arent the best choice when tackling a flare-up. Avoid any potentially irritating products that can increase inflammation, Dr. Mark says.

We love reducing wrinkles, dark spots, and saggy skin just as much as anyone else, but eliminating facial eczema should be your number one priority. Eczema is a medical condition that can turn into an infection if untreated, Dr. Peredo says.

Ready for your super approachable treatment plan? Keep your routine simple and hold off on makeup during a flare-upno eye shadow if you have eczema around your eyes or lip stains if its on your lips. After taking a lukewarm shower , apply a fragrance-free moisturizer as soon as you dry off when your skin will absorb it better, Dr. Peredo says.

What Causes Eczema Flare

A long list of factors can cause eczema to flare up. âIt could be anything that activates the immune system or anything you come in contact with,â says Sadati. Among these triggers are food, the environment, weather, and, most commonly: stress. In fact, in a National Eczema Society landmark patient survey conducted in 2020, stress was identified as the single biggest trigger of eczema flare-ups. Interestingly enough, far more women were affected than men .

The silver lining? âFace flare-ups typically donât last as long as ones on the body,â notes Akhavan. They can still last a few weeks, he explains, but that time can be shortened with the help of proper treatment.

How Do You Determine The Cause Of The Allergy

You will first need to identify the trigger for the contact allergy in order to eliminate it from your daily routine. Although the cause may be obvious, it is still best to consult a doctor, as you may need to look back and explore your past activities to find the cause .

Your doctor will be able to identify more elusive triggers by asking detailed questions and conducting allergy tests. The allergologist will also be able to advise on what you should avoid, as an allergen can be found in several different products or objects.

What about a photoallergy?

Some contact allergies are triggered by the presence of a product in combination with sun exposure! More specifically, exposure to certain UV rays can cause an allergic reaction to a product in contact with the skin. Naturally, the face is exposed to the suns rays and is thus more susceptible.

In the case of photoallergic eczema, the most common causes are medicines and sunscreen.

Follow Good Hygiene Practices

Good hygiene practices may help people manage and reduce their eczema symptoms. A person should wash their skin regularly but not use soap or heavily scented products that can over-dry or irritate the skin. They should also take short, lukewarm showers or baths, pat the skin dry instead of rubbing it, and moisturize right after bathing.

Additionally, using hydrating creams regularly may help heal the skin and keep it from getting too dry.

Some people with eczema may find that bleach baths help reduce inflammation and skin bacteria. The National Eczema Association notes that bleach concentration is similar to that of a chlorinated swimming pool. The association recommends bathing for around 510 minutes each session.

Additionally, parents and caregivers should ensure they carefully wipe and dry an infants mouth and face after eating. They should avoid using commercial, pre-moistened wipes on the face.

What To Look For In An Eczema Product

When shopping for an eczema product, your best choices are thick bland emollients that help with soothing the skin and repairing the integrity by providing barrier support, says Dr. Sonal Choudhary, MD, Dermatologist & Dermatopathologist at UPMC, Assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Choudhary adds that its a good idea to try and avoid fragranced products, and instead of long, hot baths, opt for short, cool showers. Plus, using detergents that are free of dyes and fragrances can also help prevent skin irritation.

Identifying An Eczema Outbreak

There are various types of eczema, but the most common is the type were discussing here known as atopic dermatitis or atopic eczema. It often affects children before clearing up by adulthood, but it also affects a lot of adults though, contact dermatitis is the type of eczema that most commonly affects adults.

Atopic dermatitis usually appears as a dry, flaky and itchy rash of thick, bumpy skin. If scratched or damaged in some other way, it may become infected and ooze a substance that will subsequently crust over. It commonly appears in skin creases but can affect almost any area of skin.

If you notice that a patch of skin on your face is getting itchy and starting to flake, you havent come into contact with an irritant, damaged that skin, or been exposed to any extreme conditions, and there are no other symptoms suggestive of a broader problem, then it could be that youre dealing with eczema.

Before you reach any conclusions about how to proceed, consult a medical professional for some advice. Theyll be able to diagnose any new skin condition and confirm if you have atopic skin. I Have Eczema: January 2014

Whether youre currently suffering from eczema on your face, or youre eager to reduce the chances of developing it because youve dealt with it before, there are various things you can do to keep it at bay. Here are some eczema triggers and suggestions for avoiding them:

    • Go makeup-free . Wearing makeup might seem like a good idea because it can help conceal or obscure eczema, but its only going to make things worse by blocking pores and potentially irritating the affected skin.
    • Moisturise regularly. Keeping your skin moisturised is a great habit to keep. It will look better, and be less likely to suffer damage and further the leading causes of eczema. Its also important to stay hydrated at all times.
    • Limit exposure to UV light. UV light damages and reddens skin, so be careful when encountering direct sunlight or harsh artificial lights. Wear a cap to shield your face somewhat, and use a moisturising sunscreen of at least SPF 30.
    • Keep the temperature moderate. Excessive heat will dry out your skin through moisture being lost to sweat, while excessive cold will dry out your skin through losing moisture being lost to the air stick to moderate temperatures whenever possible.
    • Steer clear of irritants or allergens. Eczema will often emerge as a reaction to an allergen or an irritant. So if you know that something gives you an allergic reaction then stay away from it.

How Do I Know If I Have Facial Eczema

How I Cured My Eczema (Face/Eyelids)?

Believe it or not, one of the most frustrating aspects of facial eczema is figuring out whether you actually have eczema. Your dry or irritated skin could be the result of a bad reaction to a product you’re using, harsh weather, and other common factors that can impact skin health.

“It can be difficult to distinguish the two as skin affected by eczema is dry and irritated, generally, dry skin is not irritated and itchy to the level of eczema and will readily respond to moisturizers, gentle skin care, and bringing humidity back to the environment,” explains Sejal Shah, a New York City-based dermatologist.

Sadick adds that unlike the mild flaking, dullness, and tightness associated with dry skin, facial eczema generally involves intense itchiness, cracked skin, and even bleeding. If you’re still stumped, or just want a second opinion, visit your dermatologist to find out for sure.
