Natural Remedies For Babies With Eczema

DIY Baby Lotion – Homemade – Improves Eczema and Baby Acne

Most often, creams, balms, butters and oils are recommended to treat baby eczema. Its important to be aware that lotions do not protect and seal in moisture well enough to work effectively as an eczema treatment. They are simple too thin.

Lets dive into my top seven recommendations for natural baby eczema remedies.

What Causes Eczema In Babies

The first step in preventing eczema is to learn what causes it, and unfortunately, there are many causes.

One of the biggest factors in whether or not a child develops eczema is the childs own health history, specifically his or her genes. If baby has a relative diagnosed with eczema, he/she is more at-risk for developing eczema as well.

In addition to babys unique genetic makeup, environmental triggers affect future flare-ups. The most common triggers include:

Boost The Healing Power With Essential Oils

A plain, unscented tallow balm works great for soothing eczema on its own. But Ive found that certain essential oils can be really helpful for eczema. Adding them to the tallow balm helps enhance the eczema soothing properties of the balm.

My favorite essential oils for soothing eczema are all contained in a blend by Plant Therapy called Silky Soft. Some other good choices would be lavender, chamomile, helichrysum, rose, and myrrh. The dilution that I find best for adding to a tallow balm is 1%.

Eczema In Babies With Black And Brown Skin

According to the National Eczema Foundation, eczema affects more African American babies than any other racial background. About 1 in every 5 thats about 20% African American babies has some form of eczema. This compares to 10.7% of Hispanic babies, 12.1% of white babies, and 13% for Asian and Native American, respectively.

Eczema doesnt appear red like it does on white skin. Instead of red patches, eczema may cause gray, darker brown, or even purple patches. These discolored patches may still be dry, warm, swollen, itchy, and/or scaly.

Ideas For Controlling Eczema

Along with our homemade eczema cream here are a few things weve done to help control her eczema:

  • Cutting down on bath frequency
  • Putting her on a dairy-free diet
  • Making our own mild laundry detergent
  • Having her sleep in long pants to minimize nighttime scratching
  • Keeping her skin moisturized

To keep her skin moisturized, we have tried nearly every lotion we could find. Even with all the products weve used, Ive never found an eczema cream that did anything but give her slightly softer eczema. Many store-bought eczema creams are petroleum-based, anyway, which means theyre not environmentally friendly and not as good for skin as their marketing claims. There are greener products available, but Ive never found them particularly effective, either.

This year Ive given up on store-bought brands and am making my own homemade eczema cream for her. Im able to use natural, plant-based ingredients and have a more effective lotion, too.

Natural Eczema Remedies For Your Kids

Homemade Eczema Cream

Eczema is one of the most common reasons parents bring their children to see me at CentreSpringMD. Its actually a topic that is near and dear to my heart because both of my kids had eczema.

My sons eczema was easily manageable with good moisturizing, but my daughters was pretty severe. The conventional recommendations from her pediatrician and my colleagues were to use topical steroids on her, but I just couldnt fathom following that advice . Her eczema involved practically her entire body, and I knew steroids were not a solution that could treat the root cause. Navigating how to manage something so simple as my babys eczema helped steer me towards Integrative Medicine and a more holistic approach to pediatric care in general. Im happy to say that my baby is now 5 years old and is happily no longer dealing with the itchies, as we used to call her eczema.

Here are five natural remedies for your childs eczema.

If after 2-3 weeks of avoiding gluten and dairy there is absolutely no improvement, you can try avoiding other commonly allergenic foods like eggs and peanuts/tree nuts. If none of those eliminations work, then getting tested for IgE allergies as well as IgG sensitivities might be next steps. We offer both kinds of tests at CentreSpringMD and often use them to guide dietary changes for children with eczema.

  • 1 part coconut oil
  • 1 part avocado oil
  • 1-2 parts shea butter .

Surprising Ways Parents Make Eczema Itchier

Some itch-relieving techniques that people use can make eczema itchier. To prevent this, dermatologists recommend that you avoid:

  • Telling your child to stop scratching: This rarely works and can leave your child feeling stressed. Stress can cause eczema to flare.

  • Using anti-itch products: This may seem strange, but anti-itch products often fail to relieve itchy eczema. To make matters worse, some contain ingredients that can cause eczema to flare. Only use an anti-itch product if your childs dermatologist recommends one.

Melt all of your base oils in a double-boiler over medium heat.

How To Make A Homemade Eczema Cream

    • Add the first 3 ingredients to a double-boiler. If you dont have a professional double-boiler, a simple steam double boiler made with a regular cooking pot and aluminum or glass bowl, will do. That said, a double boiler would be a fantastic little home DIY investment .
    • When all of the solids have melted, remove the mixture from the heat.
    • Add the 1 tsp of vitamin E oil, and the essential oils.
    • Stir to combine.
    • While still hot, distribute the liquid mixture into your round metal containers
    • Let cool for 15 minutes.

What Foods Are Good For Curing Eczema

    homemade eczema cream

Hippocrates said, Let food be thy medicine. What great words to live by! Indeed, there are certain foods that help soothe and lessen the symptoms of eczema. Once your baby has been introduced to solid food, consider adding anti-inflammatory foods into his/her diet to reduce eczema symptoms.

Try adding more of these foods into your babys diet:

Note: If mama is exclusively breastfeeding, she can help baby by eating these foods so that she can pass on the anti-inflammatory benefits to her baby.

Technically, cradle cap , is a form of eczema that affects nearly 70% of all infants by the time they are three months old. Cradle cap is characterized by crusty, flaky patches on your babys scalp.

Unlike classic baby eczema, cradle cap is typically not itchy and does not cause any discomfort to your little one. Usually, cradle cap clears up on its own, but there are some homemade treatments to try if youd like to try to get rid of it sooner.

    Make Your Own Eczema Cream

    By Kyra Oliver

The word eczema itself just doesnt sound good. It comes from a Greek word that means to effervesce, bubble or boil over. And for the 30 million , according to the Eczema Foundation, people who suffer from it, they know it doesnt look or feel good, either. Theres got to be some effective home remedies for eczema rather than needing to resort to steroidal creams, though, right?

Fortunately, there are some easy steps to take to heal from eczema and remove the horrible itch it can cause. As my article states, it starts with diet and eating both omega-3 foods as well as anti-inflammatory foods to reduce symptoms. Similarly, reduce, eliminate or use grass-fed only dairy products.

Lifestyle-wise, reduce the frequency of baths since it can cause the skin to be very dry and itchy. Sleep in long pants to help avoid nighttime scratching. Avoid harsh soaps and detergents by making your own. And hey, get in the sun to detox your body. Direct sunlight on the skin can reduce eczema by increasing production of vitamin D, which improves immunity.

Last but not least, make up this homemade eczema cream to keep the skin moisturized with anti-eczema properties.

Black Pound Day: Mums Homemade Baby Eczema Cream Goes International

    Homemade Eczema Cream Kid Friendly

When we reported last month that Black Pound Day was a thing, it was interesting to see how triggered a lot of people were.

We saw tonnes of comments on social media about how racist the idea of having a day dedicated to supporting Black business was despite the fact that the day is in no way meant to undermine or undercut business people of other colours.

In any case, Black Pound Day is enjoying a lot of success, with the Black community and its allies rallying around to promote and support Black businesses.

And one business that has profited in particular is Naturally Tribal Skincare.

British-Nigerian pharmacist, Shalom Lloyd, set up her natural skincare business from her kitchen in Buckinghamshire. The mum-of-five founded Naturally Tribal Skincare in 2016 after experimenting with making home remedies for her newborn sons severe eczema.

After going through four cycles of IVF and giving birth to twins at 40, I was so desperate to find a natural remedy for my sons eczema, which made his skin bleed, Shalom explains.

With no natural effective remedies available, I created one myself.

I never intended to start a skincare business, but I am extremely proud that people of all ethnicities love our products which infuse my British and Nigerian heritage I hope events like Black Pound Day give black-owned businesses the visibility they deserve.

Oh, and all of the products are cruelty-free and vegan-certified.

    When Did Things Get Bad

Worries didnt start to pile up too much until she was past one year. Thats when she started having horrible breakouts, huge red, dry and irritated patches of skin. Her joints were the worst and her pediatrician prescribed us a low concentration steroid cream which I wasnt very comfortable with but I agreed to try.

After reading on the package insert of the steroid that it SHOULDNT BE USED for babies younger than 2 years old, I started doubting all the medical advice I had been given.

Was eczema really without a cure? Were steroid creams the only healing I could give my daughter?

As expected, the steroid cream only made the problem better for a few days and then it came back worse. I really was desperate and became so tired of putting layers and layers of moisturizer with no result whatsoever.

The battle with eczema continued for more months after that. We got a recommendation for what was supposed to be a really good dermatologist where her diagnosis was confirmed. I had very high hopes that we might get to the bottom of this but I was highly disappointed.

By that time I had read pretty much everything there is out there to read about eczema and I had some plans in my mind. I knew that having eczema can be connected to allergies or other things in your diet, as well as other environmental factors. I was extremely shocked to hear the dermatologists advice which was to use stronger, higher in concentration steroid creams.

    Manuka Essential Oil Benefits

I used Manuka essential oil in this homemade eczema cream recipe because Manuka carries great benefits for dry and irritated skin.

The native populations of New Zealand have traditionally used all parts of this plant as an important part of their healing tradition. It prevents bacterial infections, improves symptoms of dry scalp, and carries a relaxing nature with it ².

Manuka is related to Melaleuca essential oil, as they are both part of the same botanical family of Myrtaceae. Still, they are distinctly different oils. Tea tree oil is native to Australia, Manuka is native to New Zealand.

    Eczema And Food Allergies

Babies with eczema are at a higher risk than the general population for developing food allergies. In fact, up to 67 percent of infants with severe eczema and 25 percent of infants with mild eczema will develop a food allergy, says Jonathan Spergel M.D., board certified allergist.

    • If baby has mild to moderate eczema, early and sustained exposure to allergenic foods, like peanuts, cows milk, and eggs, has been shown to decrease this risk by up to 80 percent. When baby starts solids around 6 months, I recommend trying Ready, Set, Food!, a program that gives parents the option to add the most common allergenic foods to breastmilk, formula, or purees in a safe and effective way
    • If baby has severe eczema: Consult your pediatrician before starting early allergen introduction. They may recommend allergy testing prior to introducing any allergens.
