Eczema is a very common skin condition, and is thought to affect around 31.6 million people in the USA. That means that over 10% of people in the United States have some form of eczema 11.
Eczema can affect any part of the body, but it most commonly appears behind the ears, on the hands and feet, on the insides of elbows, on the backs of knees or on the face or buttocks 12.
Diagnosis Of Ear Eczema
Ear eczema is usually diagnosed with a basic physical examination 8. The doctor will examine the area around and inside your ears for dryness, irritation and inflammation. They may also check for possible signs of infection in the ear canal.
Your doctor will likely also ask about your symptoms and family medical history to aid their diagnosis. If they think your ear irritation could have another possible cause they may perform a biopsy to rule this out. During a biopsy, a small sample of cells will be taken from the affected area and sent away for a laboratory analysis.
Shampoos And Other Hair Products
If your scalp condition isnt the result of an avoidable irritant or environmental trigger, dandruff shampoo may be beneficial.
Look for shampoos containing:
- selenium sulfide
- ketoconazole
Try using a dandruff shampoo every other time you wash your hair, and follow the labels directions. Use regular shampoo on the days you skip the dandruff shampoo.
These products can be drying to the hair. To combat this, concentrate the dandruff shampoo to the scalp area only. If your hair still needs washing, follow up with regular shampoo.
Keep in mind that coal tar may darken lighter hair colors. Coal tar can also make your scalp more sensitive to the sun, so wear a hat when outside.
Once the symptoms have cleared, you may be able to cut back to using the dandruff shampoo just once or twice a week.

How Is Cradle Cap Treated
Cradle cap and seborrheic dermatitis in infants usually clears up on its own in weeks or months. In the meantime, you may want to loosen and remove the scales on your baby’s scalp:
- Wash your baby’s hair once a day with mild, tear-free baby shampoo.
- Gently remove scales with a soft brush or toothbrush.
- If the scales don’t loosen easily, apply a small amount of mineral oil or petroleum jelly to your baby’s scalp. Let the oil to soak into the scales for a few minutes to several hours, if needed. Then use a soft brush or toothbrush to remove scales. Shampoo your baby’s hair as usual.
If regular shampooing doesn’t help, your doctor may recommend a mild steroid cream or antifungal shampoo.
For seborrhea on other parts of the body, your doctor may recommend a mild steroid or antifungal cream.
Do not use over-the-counter steroid or antifungal creams or anti-seborrhea shampoos without checking first with the doctor.

Treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis often involves several of the following options.
