How Is Allergic Contact Dermatitis Diagnosed

An allergy specialist can perform patch testing, which involves exposing your skin to small amounts of substances that commonly cause allergies.

Youll wear the skin patch for about 48 hours, keeping it as dry as possible. After a day, youll return to your doctors office so they can look at the skin exposed to the patch. Youll also come back about a week later to further inspect the skin.

If you experience a rash within a week of exposure, you likely have an allergy. Some people may experience an immediate skin reaction, however.

Even if your skin doesnt react to a substance, you can be on the lookout for substances that commonly cause your skin to be irritated. Some people keep a journal of their skin symptoms and determine what they were around when the reaction occurred.

Your doctor can recommend allergic contact dermatitis treatments based on whats causing your reaction and its severity. The following are some examples of common treatments.

For mild reactions:

For severe reactions causing facial swelling, or if the rash covers your mouth:

  • prednisone

For an infection, antibiotics are recommended.

Avoid scratching your rash because scratching can cause infection.

Managing Eczema In Winter And Year Round: A Parents Guide

Cold, dry outdoor air and indoor heating can rob skin of its natural moisture in the winter. Red, crusty, dry patches can be common on a baby’s skin, particularly in winter, and cause concern for parents. Such symptoms can be treated, however, and many babies and children do outgrow the dry, itchy skin of atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema.

We spoke with pediatric dermatologist Katherine Puttgen to learn more.

Curing And Treating Baby Eczema

Eczema in babies may be caused by environmental factors, such as low humidity. The use of uncomfortable clothing made from materials like scratchy wool can also irritate your baby, and be a factor in acquiring eczema. Allergic reactions from perfumes, body hygiene products, and even some foods may also cause this skin condition.

1. Keep your babys skin properly moisturized.Use lukewarm water when bathing your baby, which is the ideal temperature for avoiding skin dryness. After bathing, you may apply mild and fragrance-free moisturizers to keep your babys skin soft and supple.

2. Avoid over-cleaning your baby.Excessive bathing, or cleaning of your baby, can have as many damaging effects as not doing enough of it in the first place. The trick is to just wash your babys genitals, hands, and feet with water, and just rinse the rest of the body if your baby is not that dirty anyway.

3. Have your baby wear clothing made out of cotton.Cotton clothing is considered one of the most comfortable kinds of clothing available nowadays. It is thus advisable to choose loose clothes made of cotton for your babies, instead of making them wear tight, itchy, and uncomfortable materials.

4. Feed your baby nutritious and fresh foods.Malnutrition is also one of the factors of eczema. An unhealthy body or immune system is unable to fight eczema bacteria. Thus, you need to feed your baby the right foods he or she needs every day. Avoid giving your baby artificial, and junk, foods.

Eczema And Atopic Dermatitis Treatment

Different Types of Eczema

Your doctor may prescribe a corticosteroid cream or ointment to apply to your rash. This will help reduce itching and calm inflammation. Use it right after bathing. Follow your doctors directions for using this medicine or check the label for proper use. Call your doctor if your skin does not get better after 3 weeks of using the medicine.

Antihistamines like hydroxyzine reduce itching. They can help make it easier to not scratch. A new class of drugs, called immunomodulators, works well if you have a severe rash. Two drugs in this class are tacrolimus and pimecrolimus. These drugs keep your immune system from overreacting when stimulated by an allergen. However, they can affect your immune system. So the Food and Drug Administration recommends that these drugs be used only when other treatments wont work.

Try not to scratch the irritated area on your skin, even if it itches. Scratching can break the skin. Bacteria can enter these breaks and cause infection. Moisturizing your skin will help prevent itchiness.

What To Do About Itching

Try to keep your baby from scratching their itchy skin. Scratching can make the rash worse, lead to an infection, and cause the irritated skin to get thicker and more leathery.

Trim their nails often, and then take the edge off of them with a file if you can. Some parents also slip “scratch mittens” onto their little one’s hands. Others try long socks, tucked in under a long-sleeved shirt, so they’re harder for a baby to remove. View a slideshow to get more eczema skin care tips.

Is Cradle Cap Eczema

Seborrheic dermatitis, or cradle cap, is actually not eczema, though it can look like it. Cradle cap is excessive output of sebum from the sebaceous, or oil glands. Too much sebum or a change in sebum creates an oily coating, crusts, or scales on the scalp or face. Cradle cap can show up between 2 weeks and 12 months old.

Cradle cap is not usually itchy, which is a key difference between atopic dermatitis of the scalp and cradle cap.

Cradle cap forms on the top of the scalp and is not usually itchy.

Some of the microbes on skin are yeasts. Too much yeast can cause yeast infections, athlete’s foot, and dandruff in adults. In babies, yeast overgrowth is responsible for cradle cap.

Instead of avoiding baths and adding moisturizer to cradle cap, the best treatment is washing your baby’s hair once a day with a mild dandruff shampoo. You can also use petroleum jelly to loosen any scales, and then use a soft brush to gently remove excess skin.

There is no cure for eczema. But treatments can help with symptoms. The doctor will recommend different treatments based on how severe the symptoms are, the child’s age, and where the rash is. Some are “topical” and applied to the skin. Others are taken by mouth.

Topical moisturizers. Skin should be moisturized often . The best time to apply moisturizer is after a bath or shower, with the skin patted dry gently. Ointments and creams are best because they contain a lot of oil. Lotions have too much water to be helpful.

Topical corticosteroids, also called cortisone or steroid creams or ointments. These ease skin inflammation. It’s important not to use a topical steroid prescribed for someone else. These creams and ointments vary in strength, and using the wrong strength in sensitive areas can damage the skin, especially in infants.

Other topical anti-inflammatory medicines. These include medicines that change the way the skin’s immune system reacts.

Medicine taken by mouth. These can include antihistamines to help itchy kids sleep better at night, antibiotics if a rash gets infected by bacteria, and corticosteroid pills or other medicines that suppress the immune system.

Other types of treatment can include:

  • wet wraps: damp cloths placed on irritated areas of skin
  • bleach baths: bathing in very diluted bleach solution
