Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion Review: A Rich But Non

This non-comedogenic moisturizer is richer and thicker than CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion, but less thick than a creama great option for dry climates.

Everyone in my family has dry, sensitive skin , so we always need a bottle of lotion in every room. Recently, my parents have gotten really into Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion. Last time I visited them, this was the brand that was in every room of the house. Anyway, I was drawn to the minimalist packaging and the words non-comedogenic made me wonder if I could use it as a facial moisturizer. Lo and behold, I couldand I did. I even brought it with me to Vegas, which is the ultimate place to test a products ability to moisturize dry skin. My skin always starts cracking, getting itchy/flaky if Im not careful about moisturizing religiously while Im in there.

Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion did a decent job of moisturizing my face while I was in Vegas, and was noticeably oilier/richer than the no-fuss drugstore moisturizing lotion I normally use at home .

In this review, well take a closer look at the ingredients in Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion, and Ill share my impressions of it as a facial moisturizer. Then well compare it to CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion, based on ingredients and texture, and try to determine which option may be better for you, based on your skin type.

Is Cetaphil Better Than Neutrogena Or Cerave

We can not know which skin product is best between the two, because each of them works in different ways and everyone has unique skin, some brands may perform better for that individual than others.

However, there are equal amounts of people who prefer Cetaphil, Neutrogena, or CeraVe. Therefore this simply means that you as an individual should test the products and then find out which one works best for your specific skin type, choose the one that will work for you, and ignore the ones that work for others.

On numbers alone, Aveeno has the edge over Cetaphil on the basis there are less and more natural ingredients that are beneficial for Eczema and sensitive users.

In the old formula, Aveeno had two alarming ingredients that posed as a risk, Butylated Hydroxytoluene, an antioxidant, and Chlorhexidine Gluconate, a disinfectant. Be sure to check what version of the product you have.

Both Aveeno and Cetaphil have Benzyl Alcohol which is regarded as a high risk ingredient for sensitive skin users according to 1Source because of the potential health risks. With these three ingredients in mind, which one poses more of a threat to us?

Ingredient

Despite the majority of health concerns coming from the ingredients from Aveeno, Benzyl Alcohol is still considered to be a more harmful ingredientthan the other two within reason. Chlorhexidine Gluconate can cause skin irritation but Benzyl Alcohol can be harmful when in contact with your skin .

To break it down simply, Aveeno has less ingredients in their new formula that can more beneficial for those who dont have a history of high food allergies.

Eczema, also referred to as dermatitis, is a relatively common skin condition impacting approximately one in ten Americans at some point in their lifetime. Eczema is a group of conditions that causes inflamed, irritated, and itchy skin, says Nazanin Saedi, MD, director of the Jefferson Laser Surgery and Cosmetic Dermatology Center in Philadelphia. Eczema can appear all overyour face, hands, on your elbows, behind your knees and other places on your bodymanifesting as a pink to red, scaly patch of dry skin, she explains.

There are plenty of factors that can potentially trigger eczema, and genetic and environmental factors may be influential. Cold, dry air can definitely make it worse and we need to be aware as we go into colder months, she says, adding that unfortunately, there’s no cure. Its often chronic and the inflammation leads to a disruption in the normal skin barrier.

We researched dozens of lotions and evaluated them for reviews, key ingredients, consistency, ease of application, scent, and usage.

Here are the best lotions for eczema on the market.

Aveeno Vs Cerave: Different Ingredients

To make things short, CeraVe is a better product. Both do have their problematic ingredients however.

Aveeno uses a key ingredient called Avena Sativa which is one of their unique selling points.Petrolatum is another which is an emollient that soften and soothes skin by preventing moisture loss from the skin. Although it sounds like a good function, it does have the possibility of causing skin irritation. It is a prohibited substance in cosmetic products in the European Union.

The damaging ingredient in the Aveeno moisturizing lotion is Benzyl Alcohol. It is an ingredient used in skin lotions due its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. It is quite common in moisturizing creams for Eczema.

CeraVe has one single ingredient that stands out and can be problematic, Phenoxyethanol. It has been reported as harmful if absorbed through skin, causing irritation and blistering. This makes Phenoxyethanol a potential health concern for Eczema sufferers like ourselves. Another ingredient in some versions of the moisturizing lotion that needs to be highlighted is Methylparaben. It can cause serious skin irritation, especially for the eyes!

Phenoxyethanol is an interesting ingredient as it is now banned in Palau due to the damages it can cause to coral reefs. If it can cause long lasting damages to the aquatic wildlife, the question is, what kind of damage can do to our skin?

Cerave Vs Cerave: Ewg Rating

EWG is a highly reputable site for verifying the safety of ingredients in a product. The lower the rating number, the safer the product is. The moisturizing lotion for Cetaphil scored a 2 while CeraVe scored a 4. So according to EWG, Cetaphil is safer to use. Lets compare their stats side by side.

Ecotoxicology

Interestingly, the EWG analysis flags propylparaben as the main ingredient for concern. Propylparaben occurs as a natural substance found in many plants and is produced synthetically for use in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. It does have the safety hazards of causing skin and eye irritation. However, with the analysis from 1Source and the ingredients list on the back of the bottle, no propylparaben was found. The formula may of changed, so best to view the back of the bottle to ensure you are using the most up to date formulation.

Amcinonide 0.1% lotion is a high potency corticosteroid indicated for the relief of inflammatory and itchy manifestations of the skin, such as eczema. Doctors usually recommend applying a thin layer of amcinonide lotion to the affected area two or three times a day, depending on the severity.

Betamethasone valerate 0.1% lotion is a medium potency corticosteroid that people with eczema can use to relieve itchiness and inflammation. Doctors recommend applying a few drops of the lotion to the affected area and massaging the skin gently until it has absorbed the lotion.

People can get the best results by using betamethasone valerate lotion twice daily. They may be able to apply the cream more frequently to areas with persistent symptoms but only on a doctors advice.

Things To Know Before Buying A Face Cream

  • Skin Type

Skin type is the first thing to consider before buying any face cream. Each face cream is meant for a different skin type. If your skin is dry, go for a face cream meant for dry skin, and if your skin is oily, opt for a cream meant for oily skin. The effect of a face cream meant for dry skin will not be the same on oily skin.

  • Ingredients

Always focus on the ingredient list when buying a face cream. Natural or organic ingredients are safe to use, while chemicals or artificial ingredients may damage the skin and increase the risk of irritation and skin sensitivity. Creams that contain paraffin wax, petroleum, or mineral oils should be avoided as they do not allow the moisture to get absorbed into the skin. Opt for creams that contain natural ingredients like shea butter or cocoa butter that hydrate, soften, and nourish the skin.

  • Skin Concern

If you are dealing with a skin issue, choose a face cream accordingly. If your concern is aging or sagging skin, go for face creams curated for anti-aging and firming purposes. If you are dealing with acne or blemishes, opt for a cream that helps treat it.

  • Shelf Life

Creams with a long shelf life are usually fused with harmful chemicals and preservatives. On the other hand, natural creams have a shorter lifespan as they do not contain harmful additives and preservatives. Choose one according to your preference.

Aveeno Vs Cetaphil: The Differences In Ingredients

Do note that formulas have changed since the writing of this article. Both Aveeno and Cetaphil have managed to remove some of the concerning ingredients that will be listed. I highly suggest that you read the ingredient label to watch out, as old formulations may be in circulation.

Both products may have a problematic ingredient, Benzyl Alcohol. It is an ingredient used in skin lotions due its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. In the most updated formulated versions of Aveeno and Cetaphil, Benzyl Alcohol is not highlighted. Despite this, Benzyl Alcohol is an ingredient that is commonly found in lotions, so it is worth finding out a bit more about it.

The problem with Benzyl Alcohol is that it has the safety hazard of being harmful in contact with skin. It also has potential health concerns for those with Dermatitis . We should approach any products with Benzyl Alcohol with caution. It is an irritant, which can be linked to the burning sensation cases when applying the lotion.

Both have different key ingredients that makes their products unique. To get a better idea of what lotion is for you, you need to better understand what ingredients go into these products that make them stand out.
