What Does The Research Say
There are a number of studies that back up claims that probiotics can help allergy sufferers.
OptiBac conducted a randomised clinical trial with 47 hayfever sufferers. Some participants were given a probiotic combination of Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM & Bifidobacterium lactis BI-04 for 4 months whilst another took a placebo. The probiotic group saw a reduction in respiratory symptoms and their inflammatory response decreased too.4
A review in the International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology looked at 23 studies of probiotics and allergies which, all together, involved nearly 2000 people. Here most participants who took probiotics saw improvement of some sort, including milder symptoms and better quality of life. This was in comparison to a control group who took a placebo, and saw no such improvements.5
Finally, as if all this werent enough, research conducted by the University of Florida in 2017 found similar positive results. This research involved 173 sufferers of mild, seasonal allergies and was conducted at the height of hayfever season. Again, some participants took a placebo whilst others were given the probiotics.
Here each participant had to regularly fill out a questionnaire about their symptoms, and more scientific tests were done on top of this. It was found that participants who took the probiotics had fewer nasal symptoms, plus the treatment didnt cause side effects such as drowsiness which is so often the case with antihistamines.6

The researchers didn’t find any good-quality studies on the possible benefits of taking prebiotic dietary supplements during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. As a result, the WAO does not recommend that women take prebiotics during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
The researchers found 18 studies on the use of prebiotics in babies. These studies involved only babies and toddlers up to the age of three who were not breastfed. In some of the studies the children came from families with a higher risk of allergies, and in other studies they didn’t. Most of the time the prebiotics that were tested in the studies were additives in baby formula.
The studies didn’t find any clear proof that prebiotics prevent eczema. The children who took the prebiotics only had a decreased risk of asthma. Due to problems with the way the studies were done and the low number of participants, the researchers rated the quality of the studies as very low. More research is needed in order to be able to reach more reliable conclusions about the pros and cons of prebiotic baby formula. So the WAO makes only a very weak recommendation for the use of prebiotics in infants who are not breastfed.

Probiotic Supplements Arent Proven To Work For Eczema
Ive been asked a lot if I recommend taking probiotics for eczema. Ive even been approached by companies asking me to promote their probiotics for eczema!
As most of you know, my approach to eczema is known for the gut-skin connection, and while I would love to find you something that could work like a magic pill for your gut, the truth is that immune system health needs more than just healthy bacteria.
No matter what the Drug and Supplement Companies claim, relying on a supplement wont get you long-term results.
In regards to probiotics for eczema, for me there just isnt enough evidence that SOLEY taking a probiotic supplement works.
Consider this if youre looking into probiotics for eczema:
In a case study in Asia, probiotic supplementation were given in the first 6 months of life to infants. Researchers found that early life administration of a cows milk formula supplemented with probiotics showed no effect on prevention of eczema or allergen sensitisation.
Another study on probiotics preventing food allergies to eczema showed that prevention of eczema with probiotics seemed to work until age 2.
Also, in a randomized controlled trial, pregnant women and their infants-age 6 months, received daily either a probiotic or a placebo. However, the results of the study did not provide evidence that the probiotic either prevented eczema or reduced its severity. The incidence ofeczema in the probiotic group was found similar to that in the placebo group.

Confirming a case of a respiratory allergy is done by a veterinarian performing one of two tests: the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay test or the RAST test.
