What Should You Look For In An Eczema Cream
Eczema is a condition in which the skin barrier is not able to maintain the necessary moisture to provide protection from allergens and environmental stressors. People with eczema tend to have dry, irritated, inflamed skin, says Shari Lipner, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of clinical dermatology at Weill Cornell Medicine. Choosing the right moisturizer can help in preventing eczema flares and treating the eczema.
The best eczema creams and lotions are thicker moisturizers, Adarsh Vijay Mudgil, M.D., double board-certified dermatologist and founder of Mudgil Dermatology, tells SELF.
Its especially important to look for a product that contains humectant ingredients as well as moisturizing and skin-protecting ingredients . Humectants help add additional hydration, while ceramides and occlusive ingredients reinforce the skin barrier, ultimately helping to protect you from irritants that might trigger an eczema flare. Keep an eye out for products with a high oil-content-to-water-content ratio as well, recommends Dr. Lipner.
Of course, there are ingredients youll want to avoid too, Dendy Engelman, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist at Medical Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery, tells SELF. Ingredients to watch out for include fragrances, exfoliating acids , and retinol, she says: These can further irritate the skin by drying them out.

Know Where Eczema Is Most Challenging In Adults
One common frustration about adult eczema is that its usually front and center, on the face and neck. The skin on the face is thinner than elsewhere on the body, so its more sensitive, Wu explains. Facial eczema can be triggered by cosmetics or skin-care products, according to the National Eczema Society. In adults, its frequently found on the eyelids, where it can cause red, flaky, swollen upper and even lower eyelids, according to the AAD. It can also develop around the mouth. Its obviously more visible to others when it occurs on the face, so its important to treat it sooner rather than later, says Wu.
The face is not the only area that can be affected. Eczema patches on the body can become thick and discolored, especially after weeks to months of scratching, and they can develop scabs. The discoloration can persist even months after the itching goes away, says Wu. Thickened skin from years of scratching may even itch all the time, the AAD notes.

How To Shop For A Moisturizer
Regular use of moisturizers is a therapeutic cornerstone for sensitive skin management, Mikailov says. As you go about choosing one, there are a few key things you need to look for, particularly when it comes to the ingredient list.
In general, moisturizers should be free of dyes, fragrances, and scents, Mikailov says. The list of ingredients should be minimal ideally under 10.
Here are a few key steps to picking the right formula for your skin:
Lastly A Special Note About Scrubs:
Although scrubs may be a seemingly obvious fix for sloughing off dead skin, avoid using scrubs on skin with active eczema. A scrub by definition would likely be really irritating for skin affected by eczema. However, if the granules are soft , and if the base of the product is heavier and more ointment-like, then water may be trapped in the skin , and the hydration may soothe the eczema.

Should I Use Different Products For Different Areas
Absolutely! According to Nussbaum depending where the eczema is located it should be treated differently. For example, eyelids and sensitive skin areas like underarms, inguinal folds and lips will be treated with a lighter strength corticosteroid than thicker skin like the back or legs, she explains.
The scalp can experience a few different conditions which may look like eczema, however could be a form of seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis or fungal infection. Therefore always see a dermatologist to help diagnose the condition. Depending on the condition, there are different shampoos, gels and creams containing ingredients such as coal tar, salicylic acid, corticosteroid or selenium sulfide can also effectively treat the scalp.

How To Use A Moisturizer
When applying moisturizer, its important to first gently exfoliate so the cream can fully penetrate your skin. You can do this with a damp washcloth, which will also cleanse the skin of any dirt and excess oil.
Next, dont dry your face completely having a little water on your skin will actually help seal in moisture. Then, lightly apply a pea-sized amount of moisturizer using your fingertips until all the product is absorbed.
In addition to moisturizing with products, getting enough sleep, limiting alcohol, and eating foods that have high water content will help support your skin.
What Recommendations Do You Have For Over
In general, one of the best things you can do for eczema is to find a great moisturizer. Lotions can be a bit drying, as they have a higher water content, so board-certified dermatologist and CEO of Curology, Dr. David Lortscher recommends picking a heavier cream with ceramides or petrolatum.
If your skin is particularly dry or if you’re exposed to very cold dry air, you should begin using a thin layer of a heavier moisturizer in the morning to help protect your skin. Moisturizing is the key to improving skin barrier function, resolving symptoms much faster, and reducing relapse with continual treatment.

My Take On This Moisturizer:
- Fresh and light fragrance
- Con: not hydrating enough for drier skin types
To be fair, I havent used this product very much. My twin sister used this moisturizer at the very beginning of our fungal acne journey while we were still navigating our new routines, and I occasionally stole a few pumps.
I find the fresh and light fragrance claim to be misleading. For me, this product is heavily scented, and it stuck with me throughout the day. This is more of a preference than an actual con, but if strongly scented products bother you- be warned.
Otherwise, my only real problem with this moisturizer is the price point and the fact that I can only find it online. $24.90 for 1.33 fl oz is steep, but it also isnt the most expensive moisturizer on the list.
This is probably another good option for summer months, but not the best option for those of us with very dry skin.
Best For Sensitive Skin Runner
Yes, it’s possible to have skin that’s sensitive and acne-prone, all at the same time. Since typical acne-fighting ingredients are powerful and drying, you want to be extra picky about finding a formula to reduce breakouts without irritating your sensitive skin. Rest assured that you can trust this guy from Cetaphil, which is another favorite of Dr. Rabach. It’s oil-free, non-comedogenic, and lightweight.

- Best oil moisturizer: Viva Naturals Organic Jojoba Oil
All skin needs moisture to look and feel its best. But those with sensitive skin may have a harder time finding the right products when it seems like almost every formulation causes issues with your already fragile face.
Sensitive skin is not a medical term, but generally we refer to individuals who have skin that is irritated by many environmental triggers as sensitive, explains board certified dermatologist Anar Mikailov, MD, founder of KP Away skin care line.
He says that environmental triggers like humidity, temperature, wind, and sun exposure can cause sensitive skin. However, lifestyle triggers such as using too many products with irritating ingredients or even spending time in chlorinated pools can also make skin more sensitive. When so-called normal skin is overexposed to these triggers over time, it can become sensitized.
The main rule to follow for sensitive skin? Less is more. Since moisture is crucial for healthy skin, choosing the right moisturizer is even more important because it may be one of the only products your skin can tolerate.

It Can Help Improve Fine Lines And Wrinkles
Aloe vera works to prevent skin aging through molecules called sterols, Engelman says. These molecules promote the production of hyaluronic acid and collagen, which can both reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in your skin.
Aloe may also help your skin tolerate other anti-aging products that can cause redness and peeling. It can be used alongside your traditional anti-aging ingredients like retinol or hydroxy acid to help minimize potential irritation, Zeichner says.
Controlling Eczema By Moisturizing
Keeping your skins moisture intact is one of the most important things you can do to help control your eczema.
Moisturizers helps protect the outermost layer of skin known as the stratum corneum or skin barrier. People living with eczema have a damaged skin barrier, which makes their skin more sensitive to irritants, allergens, bacteria and other invaders. A damaged skin barrier also make it harder for the skin to retain water, leading to chronic dry, itchy skin, which can cause eczema to flare or get worse.
Wind, low humidity, cold temperatures, harsh soaps and prolonged exposure to water, all lead to dry skin. So, its important to understand how and when to properly moisturize and which products are best to use when you have eczema.
