Makeup Tips For People With Eczema

  • Glycerin, Shea Butter, and Lanolin: It is necessary that your make-up product carries either of these ingredients as they have moisturizing properties with glycerin being non-toxic too. They prevent the skin from flaring up and drying. However, in case of Lanolin, it might not complement every skin.
  • Hyaluronic acid: The element is widely accepted for healing skin, moisturizing of skin and as an anti-inflammatory agent. The cream with hyaluronic acid forms a permeable layer, penetrates into the skin, thus boosting the hydration and elasticity of the skin. The protective layer on the skin locks the moisture inside to offer you clear, youthful appearance.
  • Niacinamide:Niacinamide/ Niacin is also referred to as Vitamin B3 and is recognized as an essential nutrient as it comes to a healthy body and proper functioning. Your bodys nervous system, brain, and digestive system all depends on Niacin . Using niacinamide can be one of the best treatment to diminish the symptoms of eczema. Niacinamide possess multiple benefits for your skin that includes the synthesis of ceramides, improved epidermal and dermal cell growth, effective in soothing the skin and also helpful in the reduction of wrinkles.

According to Dr. Levy, makeup with hyaluronic acid can be hydrating for patients with eczema.

Additionally, makeup with ceramides may also provide barrier repair which makes the application less irritating and helps keep eczema under control, Dr. Levy noted. Makeup that contains niacinamide may act as an anti-inflammatory and help calm down active dermatitis/eczema.

Dr. Klein said the following ingredients in makeup might be good for women with eczema-prone skin because they are hydrating and anti-inflammatory:

How To Treat Eczema On Your Face

The Best Cleansers for People With Eczema, According to ...

Its common and generally safe to treat body eczema with topical steroids, but you need to be careful applying the same products to your face, says Kenneth Mark, MD, a dermatologist practicing in New York City and Aspen, CO. Steroids can thin your skin if used improperly.

Thats why its important to start with more mild, moisturizing products, then go from there. The goal is to restore the barrier function of your skin without causing more irritation, Dr. Mark says.

One extra challenge when treating facial eczema: You probably use a lot of products on your face that you dont use on your body, and some of those products arent the best choice when tackling a flare-up. Avoid any potentially irritating products that can increase inflammation, Dr. Mark says.

We love reducing wrinkles, dark spots, and saggy skin just as much as anyone else, but eliminating facial eczema should be your number one priority. Eczema is a medical condition that can turn into an infection if untreated, Dr. Peredo says.

Ready for your super approachable treatment plan? Keep your routine simple and hold off on makeup during a flare-upno eye shadow if you have eczema around your eyes or lip stains if its on your lips. After taking a lukewarm shower , apply a fragrance-free moisturizer as soon as you dry off when your skin will absorb it better, Dr. Peredo says.

Natural oils are an excellent option to remove makeup prior to cleansing the face! There is a wide range of natural oils that can be used to remove makeup, with some oils being better for specific skin types. For instance, grape seed oil and apricot kernel oil are fantastic options for oily skin types, because they tend to be lighter and less likely to clog the pores. Jojoba oil or argan oil are examples of slightly heavier oils that may be best for dry or eczema-prone skin. Simply use 5-6 drops of oil in the palm of your hand and gently massage all over the face and around the eyes. After this step, use your regular cleanser to rinse skin free of makeup and excess oil, leaving behind clean and hydrated skin. When purchasing an oil, be sure to look for ones that are cold-pressed and organic.

What Ingredients Should You Avoid

When selecting the make-up products that you will be putting on your skin it can be good to avoid products that have added fragrances and preservatives. Preservatives such as butylparaben or methylparaben can lead to additional skin inflammation and irritation. Looking for products that contain an oil like neem oil, is a natural preservative can be a good alternative.

If the product contains salicylic or glycolic acid, these are ingredients that can dry the skin out and dry skin is often a trigger for an atopic dermatitis flare. What Does A Good Skincare Routine Look Like For Eczema

Eczema is characterised by skin barrier dysfunction, says Kluk, highlighting the crux of what a clever eczema skincare routine should set out to do: reinforce and take care of that skin barrier.

First things first: emollient therapy. This means cleansing twice daily with a soap substitute and frequently and liberally applying moisturiser, says Kluk, who suggests applying an emollient up to three times each day. In general, the dryer skin is, the greasier your emollient should be. Moisturising helps restore the integrity of the skin barrier, so it should be a fundamental part of an eczema sufferers skincare routine, even when flare-ups have been put to rest.

Kluks top tip is to monitor the general quality of skin. If it is dry in some places and oily in others, look to using a lighter moisturiser gel or fluid cream on the areas where skin is oilier, and a richer cream or ointment on areas where skin is drier. As for SPF you cant get away that easily its still important to use where possible, but as most eczema sufferers will know, it can be difficult to tolerate. Kluk recommends testing a few different formulas on a small area first to ensure they dont sting or further irritate skin. Look for mineral or physical sunscreens, and those labelled suitable for sensitive skin.
