Why Probiotics For Eczema In Children Are Worth Trying

The BEST Probiotics for eczema

By Sabra Way

Probiotics often come up when discussing possible supplements to use for eczema. The question is what are the best probiotics for eczema? When do you use them and how will they help? In many previous studies involving atopic dermatitis, the probiotics were given to pregnant mothers and then continued in the infant after birth. Results were great, but what if a child didnt receive probiotics inutero? Will probiotics given only after birth help a childs eczema? Because probiotic strains have different effects, the results have been variable. However, in one new study, the benefits of probiotics for eczema in children has finally been documented. In this study, two probiotic strains were either given singly or in combination and tested against a placebo in children 1-18 years of age with moderate atopic dermatitis. After three months, eczema symptoms in the probiotic groups were reduced, and this effect remained for another month without probiotic supplementation. The probiotic group also had improved quality of life measuring things like sleep, symptoms, feelings and activities affected by their skin. Atopic dermatitis improved especially in children younger than age 12, who had breastfed longer than six months.

Takeaways:

  • Combine it with a healthy whole food diet. We recommend recipes from the Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook.
  • Further points on how to improve your microbiome can be found in our post: Are Antibiotics Contributing To The Rise in Food Allergies?
  • When Should I Start Probiotics

This is a very good question. Certain strains of Lactobacillus were helpful at 6 months such as LF. Others such as LS2, LP, LF appears to help starting 1 year old and up.

A paper from Japan by Enomoto et al found that Bifidobacterium breve M-16V and Bifidobacterium longum BB536 were helpful to reduce the risk of developing eczema. Their protocol was 1 month of probiotics to mothers prior to delivery and then 6 months of probiotics to the infant. So for this strain, it appears to help at a younger age for children with eczema

Basically, if you plan to start probiotics and your baby is less than 6 months old, consider bifidobacterium. Otherwise, the research seems to show lactobacillus will be more helpful.

How Can I Reduce The Impact Eczema Has On My Life

Although eczema can be a difficult condition to live with, it is important not to let eczema rule your life. Eczema is often seen in people with a personal or family history of allergies such as hay fever or food intolerances. It is these immune imbalances that must be addressed when looking at the treatment of eczema.

One factor that plays a vital role in the development and maintenance of a well-functioning immune system is a healthy balance of good bacteria within the gut. Good bacteria, also known as probiotics, inhabit the bowel and are responsible for maintaining optimal digestive function, supporting immune function and improving general health and wellbeing. Supplementing with probiotics can help to enhance the level of good bacteria within the gut and restore balance if the microbiome is disturbed.

First Of All What Are Probiotics

They are good bacteria that go to your gut and help improve digestive and immune function. Some people may also experience other health benefits such as improvement in allergy symptoms, cholesterol, irritable bowel syndrome, infectious diarrhea. In our case, we are concerned about whether it benefits eczema symptoms.

Common bacteria that are used as probiotics include:

    • Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Saccharomyces, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, Escherichia, and Bacillus

There is also something called prebiotic, which are fuel to help probiotics to keep going. They are usually complex carbohydrates such as inulin and other fructo-oligosaccharides.

The benefits of probiotics depend on the species and strain used. I will discuss in more detail about different strains later in this article.

    How The Intervention Might Work

Rationale for using probiotics to treat eczema

The intestinal microflora is a large collection of microorganisms that live in the human intestine and confer intestinal, immune, and nutritional benefits on the host. The composition of the intestinal microflora has been found to be different in those with eczema, and such differences may precede the development of active eczema. One consistent finding in relevant studies is a reduced proportion of Bifidobacteria species in the faeces of infants with eczema , as well as in older children and young adults with atopic dermatitis . In the latter study, lower numbers of Bifidobacteria species also correlated with greater severity of the disease. Later studies have shown that low microbial diversity in the neonatal period is associated with the development of eczema in the first year of life , eczema with atopy in the first two years of life , and IgEassociated eczema in the first 18 months . Another study found that patients with atopic dermatitis had increased numbers of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii associated with low levels of shortchain fatty acids, possibly leading to aberrant Thelper type 2 cell responses .

Probiotics are widely consumed worldwide in the form of fermented milk, and they are potentially a cheap and accessible treatment for eczema. Although all probiotics have certain properties in common , the clinical and laboratory effects of probiotics can vary markedly between species .

    Data Collection And Analysis

We used standard methodological procedures as expected by Cochrane. We recorded adverse events from the included studies and from a separate adverse events search conducted for the first review. We formally assessed reporting bias by preparing funnel plots, and we performed trial sequential analysis for the first primary outcome eczema symptoms at the end of active treatment.

We used GRADE to assess the quality of the evidence for each outcome .

Theres A New Tool That Can Help With Your Kids Eczema

Probiotics are a new way to help heal eczema from the inside out.

    Volo HealthcareNovember 16, 2021

Great news for Canadian parents who have children that suffer from eczema . New research shows that doctors, pharmacists and families now have an additional treatment tool to consider for kids with moderate to severe eczema: probiotics.

Probiotics are a safe and effective way to help heal the irritated, itchy skin of atopic dermatitis. Probiotics are the good bacteria that naturally live in and on our bodies. Together with other live microorganisms, they form a microbiome. You may be familiar with probiotics already. Maybe youve heard about the friendly bacteria in yogurt, or bought some capsules when a stomach flu swept through your house. It can seem a little innovative to think a probiotic powder can dramatically affect the skin, but it makes sense once you know how it works.

    So, how does it work?

It starts with the microbiome, which is unique to each person. When balanced, the microbiome works to help your body function smoothly.

Results show that after 12 weeks, 96% of patients have improved SCORAD results . They also had a better, balanced and more diverse microbiome status, and 91% of patients had cleared or almost cleared their symptoms. The clinical study also showed that there was no need for corticosteroids after six weeks of treatment.

Evidence On Prevention Of Whatever Combination Of Allergic Diseases Other Than Ad

Supplementation with probiotics did not protect against food allergy, asthma, or allergic rhinitis according to two metanalyses published in 2013 and the WAO review that evaluated four randomized trials in 2015 . Two studies evaluating the risk of developing any allergy following supplementation in the breastfeeding mother and infant did not report any benefit or harm . The same conclusions were expressed by the other three papers . However, Lundelin et al. reported the long-term safety and efficacy of four different strains of probiotics: children receiving LGG perinatally alone or in combination with other strains had a lower risk of developing allergic diseases during long-term follow-up compared to the placebo group .

A positive effect was also demonstrated in a different RCT , involving 220 children with CMA, randomized to either receive extensively hydrolyzed casein formula alone or with L. rhamnosus GG. In the group supplemented with LGG, there was a decrease in the incidence of allergic manifestations over a 3-year period and an increased rate of acquisition of tolerance at 36 months .

    Description Of The Intervention

No cure is currently known for eczema however, a wide range of treatments are available to control and reduce the symptoms . Health professionals assist people in management of their disease through a variety of treatment methods, including emollients, topical steroids, topical tars, and topical tacrolimus and pimecrolimus. Other treatments such as wet wrap dressings, phototherapy, avoidance of triggers such as food allergens, and complementary therapies are also used . Many treatments are of unknown effectiveness . Emollients, topical corticosteroids, and topical calcineurin inhibitors are universally recommended . With deeper knowledge of the immunopathogenesis of atopic dermatitis, new treatments have emerged such as dupilumab, an interleukin 4 receptor alpha subunit inhibitor, and inhibitors of the phosphodiesterase enzyme . Treatment regimens can be timeconsuming and expensive for patients and their families, and new treatments that are effective, cheap, and simple to administer are needed.

Is Cradle Cap A Form Of Eczema

Calming Skincare Supplements : Eczema Shield

Technically, cradle cap , is a form of eczema that affects nearly 70% of all infants by the time they are three months old. Cradle cap is characterized by crusty, flaky patches on your babys scalp.

Unlike classic baby eczema, cradle cap is typically not itchy and does not cause any discomfort to your little one. Usually, cradle cap clears up on its own, but there are some homemade treatments to try if youd like to try to get rid of it sooner.

Best Baby Probiotics For Specific Conditions

While were still years away from knowing whether all infants and toddlers should take probiotics daily, there is solid science showing that certain strains can, in fact, help with specific health issues. A few examples:

Diarrhea: Runny poop is not uncommon among infants and young children. But if diarrhea persists, it can lead to dangerous dehydration. Taking antibiotics for an ear infection or other ailment makes diarrhea more likely. Fortunately, several studies show that a few select strains help prevent or alleviate diarrhea. These include Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, or LGG, found in Culturelle Kids Daily Chewables, Culturelle Daily Probiotic Packets, and MetaKids Baby Probiotic drops, as well as Saccharomyces boulardi lyo CNCM 1-745, available in FlorastorKids Daily Probiotic Supplement.

Colic: The probiotic L. reuteri DSM 17938 has been well-studied for infants with colic, and the best studies are those done on breastfed babies, Merenstein says. It wont get rid of colic completely, but it will decrease crying time. Some research suggests L. reuteri DSM 17938 may also relieve gastrointestinal upset associated with colic. This strain is found in BioGaia Protectis products, available as drops for infants or chewable tabs for older children, as well as Gerber Soothe Probiotic Colic Drops, Gerber Good Start Soothe Powder Infant Formula, and Pedia-Lax Probiotic Yums.

    Mommys Bliss Probiotic Drops

Why its great: The packaging for this probiotic is one of my favorite things about it. Sure it has an excellent strand of probiotic thats proven to improve gut health too, but let me tell you about the dropper. So, most infant probiotics tell you to administer a certain amount of drops, but it can often be hard to know if youre giving your baby the correct amount. And, sometimes its difficult to get the drops out at all . The dropper that comes in this bottle of probiotics has a black line on it, so you know exactly where to draw the liquid up to.

Mommys Bliss is an excellent woman-owned and woman-run company. Because of this, they understand the needs of mommas. With this easy to use product, you know you are giving your baby what they need, from age newborn and up.

Keep in mind: This product should not exceed temperatures above 77, so you will want to store it accordingly.

Good for: Newborn babies, as the product is safe for babies from day one.

Evidence On Prevention Of Atopic Dermatitis

The pioneering study using Lactobacillus GG probiotic supplementation in pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and infants at high risk of allergy, demonstrated a reduced prevalence of early AD in children compared to the control group . Noteworthy, specific Toll-like receptor genetic variations were associated with the protection of eczema by two probiotic strains , suggesting that individual genetic factors might influence the efficacy and outcome of probiotic supplementation .

Table 2 shows details of published RCTs on this topic, with several studies supporting , while others providing no evidence , for recommending probiotics in primary prevention of atopic disease.

Two other meta-analyses published in 2015 documented a clear benefit of probiotics only for primary prevention of eczema but did not report significant preventive effects of any other allergic manifestations . Zuccotti et al. analyzed 17 studies and found that probiotics supplementation was associated with a significantly lower relative risk for developing eczema compared with placebo , and the most pronounced effect was obtained in particular when heterogeneous mixtures of probiotic strains were used .

    What Is Histamine Intolerance

Does probiotic skincare for eczema exist? – The Eczema Podcast (S5E10 & 11)

Histamine is one of those compounds that requires balance.

Your body relies on histamine for:

But too much histamine, and you begin to see signs of histamine intolerance.

Histamine intolerance shows up when your little one is sensitive to any extra histamine in diet.

This means high-histamine foods, high-histamine probiotics, or foods that liberate histamine.

Whats more, chronically elevated levels of histamine can keep babys eczema active.

This means that histamine intolerance is one piece of the puzzle thats often overlooked when working with eczema. Sometimes by simply managing histamine load, you can get rid of stubborn eczema and recurring rashes.

    Gut Microbiome And Eczema

Understanding the direct correlation between the gut microbiome and eczema is being researched more and more nowadays.

The number of people with allergies has increased dramatically in the UK over the past 50 years and 40% of children now develop allergic conditions such as eczema, asthma, and rhinitis . Whilst the conditions often persist through life, most allergies develop in the first two years of life, particularly during the first six months following birth.

Infant eczema involves inflamed red patches on your babys skin and can be uncomfortable and distressing for both babies and parents.

And, if children are diagnosed with atopic eczema by two years of age, they have up to an 80% chance of developing asthma by age 12 and higher risks of rhinitis.

There are many reasons suggested for why eczema develops and numerous treatments suggested to ease the symptoms, but experts now agree that exposure to sufficient amounts of good bacteria during the first weeks of life can help to reduce the risk of allergy development generally and the risk of eczema specifically.
